The meaning is if you hate you cannot be his disciple...You have quoted the scripture wrong ..the scripture reads correctly ...
Luke 14:26. "If any man come to me, and hate not his father and mother and wife and children and brethren and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple".
Hate not, etc... The law of Christ does not allow us to hate even our enemies, much less our parents: but the meaning of the text is, that we must be in that disposition of soul, as to be willing to renounce, and part with every thing, how near or dear soever it may be to us, that would keep us from following Christ.
You definately quoted the scripture wrong ...Everyone has access to a bible...Just quote it like it is written, not the way you want people to see it..God Bless You!

This is one verse that unbelievers ask about all the time. To someone who does not understand, it is confusing.
Jesus is not literally telling us to hate our families. Jesus does not order anyone to hate anyone. Jesus is the very epitome of love. Let me paraphrase the verse for you.
Jesus is saying, you cannot be my disciple if you are not willing to put me number one. You must be willing to even put aside your own family, yes, you must even deny yourself, if you want to be my disciple.
What Jesus actually says about hate is a little extreme, but He had to say something to the disciples that was very strongly worded so that they would see that He was not joking, He was very serious.
And literally the disciples did put everything to the side and follow Jesus. Peter was a fisherman(I think it was peter) and when he was called into the ministry, he was at work on his boat with his dad and his brother(if I remember correctly). Jesus called him and he literally put down his fishing equipment and just follwed Jesus. I wonder what his dad and his brother thought about that?
But, the thing is he did not have time to say to Jesus "wait Jesus I have some stuff to do first."
Jesus did not have time to wait either, the plans of His life was already in motion and He was so holy and had such an air about Him that when He said "Follow Me", People followed.

not sure what translation you are reading but my bible says: Luke 14:26 Good news bible
Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father, and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well.
which to me means that we must hold god above all else

You missed something.
Here, read it again
Ifanyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters--[yes] and even his own life also--he cannot be My disciple.

That is in the language a comparative. A persons love for Jesus Christ must be supreme. It must be greater than your love for your family, your home or yourself, because it may cost you all of these things to follow Jesus Christ. And for many of those people it did cost all those things.

If you do not hate your own life.. You will not be needy of God. God wants us to constantly need and follow Him. Imagine us human beings if we lived a perfect life. We will no longer need Him. We will not be in awe of His power and greatness. That is why humans have flaws... So that we can always ask for his guidance everyday. He wants us to trust Him... and Him only... Jesus said." I will not leave nor forsake you."

Yes.
Basically, Christ is saying that believing in him and receiving him means you have to be his number one priority. Your relationship has to take precedence over everything else - even your family.
