Dr. Peri-

I am sorry you have metastatic, stage 4 colon cancer.

You asked me for my professional opinion, in consultation, about whether or not another abdominal operation would be of benefit to you.

I have made it very clear to you that I do not believe that further surgery on your abdomen is indicated, and that such an operation will not help your cancer problem.

I cannot think of a way that I can make this more clear to you.

I am sorry you are unhappy with that opinion.

It is certainly your perogative to seek other professional opinions from other surgeons.

I have nothing further to say to you, and I would appreciate it if you would stop e-mailing me.

Dr .Eugene Foley

It's difficult to say from this brief letter what the true circumstances may be but it seems like you should be seeking other options besides an abdominal surgery. I have no idea why the doctor no longer recommends surgery but if you wish to seek a second or third opinion it may be possible to find someone willing to tackle your case. Otherwise there may be other options such as chemotherapy, radiation, or a Clinical Trial. Surgery is not always the best option . . control of the disease should also be a consideration.

Seek additional opinions and explore different treatment options.

It's a reasonable letter, and I'm afraid its meaning is quite clear.

However I understand the desperation of someone with stage 4 cancer whose options are limited, and as the doctor says, the patient can ask for a second opinion.

The vast majority of us desperately want to continue to live. But in our desperation, we must also face reality.

Dr. Foley's last sentence is quite harsh, but it sounds as if you have been hounding him unreasonably.
