Jesus referred to the people he taught as "being like sheep without a shepherd". Sheep without a shepherd all get lost, they are very defenseless creatures. Without constant oversight they will get lost or be eaten by predators.
People are kind of like sheep. We all go astray without help and good shepherding. When a person trusts Jesus for help and enters a personal relationship with Him, Jesus promises to help him/ guard him in danger/to never leave him alone. Some people refer to those who don't know Jesus as being lost "sheep", which just gets shortened to "lost". It may sound condescending, but that is not how we mean it. Its a description of someones spiritual condition.
I don't know you, but I've needed help in my life. I never had much help with life in my family. Without God, I would have died by age 18 from suicide. I was abused for years as a small child and I truly felt kind of lost. I'm still amazed I was able to trust Jesus, but He has always been good to me and done good for me. He helps me in everything from locating my misplaced keys to dealing with death and other big losses.
Jesus is called The Good Shepherd, in the Bible. He truly is that and more!!

those who have not accepted the free gift that Jesus offers
Jesus died to pay for your sins on the cross
your sin will send you to hell and you cant pay for it on your own
you need a Savior and Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for you
