Jesussaves: What about death penalty?

And why do Ten Commandments say 'Thou shalt not kill, unless in war?"

*I mean, why do the Ten Commandments NOT say that?

So Nadia, are you saying we should 're-write' bits of 'holy' scriptures, or we should accept that they weren't written for modern times?

I think the answer is yes unfortunately! There are scriptures that state this to be true, but it always depends on the circumstances.. Similar to capital punishment these days. However we must keep in m ind that times were different back then. More primitive than these days so many instances then where it is stated that it's ok to take a life the issues can be resolved peacefully these days.

Does the Golden Rule allow it?

If I went insane tomorrow and the only way to stop me from hurting anyone was to take my life, I approve now and make my approval irrevocable for the future. Wouldn't you do the same?

That is a non trivial application of the GR.

Its encouraged.....

* Isaiah 13:15-18 - "Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished. See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold. Their bows will strike down the young men; they will have no mercy on infants nor will they look with compassion on children."

Nice hey.....?

In the Bible the Hebrew word used in "Thou shalt not kill" is "ratsach" which refers to intentional killing without cause or killing the innocent or what we would refer to as "murder" in modern English.

There are other Hebrew words for "kill". "Nakah" is used for unintentional killing for example.

So, by definition, capital punishment, killing in war, self-defense and accidental death is not murder (ratsach).

If God / Allah tells them to.... then of course they're allowed. Until that time though, he has effectively given them standing orders not to do it (under most circumstances).

They tend to ignore the circumstances under which they ARE supposed to kill relative to those where they are not though. Translation of the Bible from the old languages to English rather lost the distinction between murder and legal execution.

Destruction is never allowed in Islam (that will against the meaning of Islam: peace)

Even in a war, Islam code forbids:
-killing under-age
-killing over-age
-destroy environment such as plant, animals

If you discussed with world-wide Muslims (and Muslimah) there are many Muslim Community AGAINST SMOKING for its destructive effect to the Smoker oneself

forgive my English

Christians: yes. there is a difference between killing and murder. If someone is trying to take my life or the life of my neighbor, I can and will kill them. I may NOT premeditate a murder on someone who is not in the process of trying to kill me.
