Absolutely - but they only work because you want to make the change =) Keep positive thoughts in your head, try to be nice to everyone even when it's difficult, do some good things for people, and try your hardest to not lie about anything - not even the smallest thing - read the positive and wise literature, say prayers of thankfulness first, asking second... give in to the temptation to do good and feel love/compassion for your fellow mankind and creatures and you'll feel the change very quickly! Stick with it, I know you can! I admire people who try to improve themselves - the desire to do it is the first step! :) Good luck! :) Don't fell into the temptation to go back to your old ways. There will be a lot of temptation, but you can be strong! :)

Yes, it is always possible to change your character for the better. The important thing here is the intent. Books and prayers may help, but its the intent that matters.

For example. There are some people who say things like, "There is not a racist bone in my body" and who thus think they do not need to be vigilant. Then there are times when they act like everyone else. But if you realize that you live in a culture where racism thrives and it *is* a part of you even though you don't *want* it to be . . . well then you are going to watch yourself. You are going to be *more careful* than those who think they don't have a problem. Now the racism example is just one example, but it could be anything. The main thing is to try to isolate the major areas of work that you need, and take the appropriate actions to combat them, whether that be prayer, reading, meditation, counselling or whatever. But there is not a person in this earth who is unable to better themselves. Since you do want to improve, you have already come a long way. Good luck.

And by the way, don't be too hard on yourself when you make a mistake. No one is perfect; we are all works in progress. You will screw up from time to time like everyone else. Just don't give up. Take care.

Actually, you already have.

You are here asking, that is the first step.

Will praying do it? Maybe for some, but too many people fall into a "holier than thou" mentality, which is very bad.

To become better, try making your actions match your intentions, and directly think on that. If your intentions are not as good as you want them to be, change them!

Many people have selfish intentions, and this is not always a bad thing. To make your selfish desires be fulfilled, you should try being unselfish! When one is unselfish, their place is found, and their happiness rises.

The past is just that. You can make amens to the people you have wronged, and that will help your karma a lot. You will be surprised when you are making amens for past deeds how many people have forgiven you already. Be there for them, and your enemies will become your friends.

To read and pray are not the answers for you, you must DO!

Be who you want to be, you do not have to live by your initial programming.

If you want to "BE" something, the way to do so is to DO the things that bring that about.

If you want to BE generous, Give.
If you want to BE a peacemaker, ENGAGE in peace.
If you want to BE loving, LOVE.
If you want to BE kind, DO acts of kindness.

One does not become something by reading, but by DOING.

Mother Theresa could have remain sedentary and read a bunch of books about the poor. She could have prayed for them, but instead she DID something.

Jesus said to offer wishes and prayers will not fill a hungry man's stomach or keep him warm at night. BEING REQUIRES ACTION. Anyone can be good in their thoughts. We are defined though, by our deeds. James says "Faith without works is dead."

Would you rather go to a surgeon who had read a bunch of books, or one who performed surgery.
Would you rather go to a restaurant where the lead chef had never cooked?
Would you like to hire as a wilderness guide someone who had only looked at maps, but had no outdoor experience?
Would you hire an electrician who had never wired a house?

Reading and prayer have their value. Action though, changes things.

It is definitly, a good course of action. Doing mind-body exercises, eating a healthy diet, and not over indulging will also help. You may also try meditation. You have to find what works for you. Everyone is different. This one size fits all mentality in this country, is very insensitive to individuals who are different. You need to become more like a spiritual warrior, and do battle to uphold your moral character, so you can contribute positively to a better future for yourself and the world.

oh Yes, with the Power of the Holy Spirit and the power of scripture you can be transformed.

Most things take time, but it is very possible to change. It is the most effective if you are surrounded by other Christians who can interact with you and give you love and feedback on your behavoir, and be good examples to you.

Hello!
I'm a Christian and the only real way to walk away from sin, in heart, it to actively walk toward Jesus. No amount of so-called self-control or willpower can change our hearts. Perhaps we might modify outward behavior, but that may not be an indicator of our true heart condition--spiritually speaking. Keep walking toward Jesus. He really likes it when you do.

I think I read it in "Steps to Christ" by Ellen White...
