Don't know what bmw is waiting for... traditionally, it's a tow truck but Honda has had a few fuel cell (Hidrogen) cars running in California for years. Don't think converting a regular engine to burn hydrogen is a do-it-yourself project. Still best of luck!

Look at the informative BMW website. Hydrogen 7 series car is out just waiting for fueling stations. Also investigate Hydrogen powered fuel cells. So your lession is find out which is more efficent burning H to make mechanical power internal combustion technology or burning H in a fuel cell to make electricity? In addition to solor panels H-Electric may be the way of the future. However there is one glitch it takes substancial electric engery to break Hydrogen out of water. And when it is used burned converted it makes water.
