I ask this because I live in LA without a car, and I am thinking of going to a club in Hollywood, then taking the bus back and walking through the Macarthur Park/downtown area along Wilshire, because that's where I will crash after the club. However, I will go alone. I have my doubts about safety that time of night there.

That is not one of the better parts of town. The MacArthur park area used to be a open market for drugs and prostitution. It isnt as open now as it once was and at 3am you won't see too many people. However the 18th street Gang is still very active in that area and street robberies are commonplace in the area.

Safety in numbers. It is not that bad around the MacAruthur Park area or Wilshire. The police are in view all of the time, but why do you want to walk and walk alone?

Sorry, but I had to laugh when I read your question.
That is the LAST place I would walk, even in the light of day-- forget about at 3 am. Not only is the 18th St gang busy in the area, MS 13 is, too, and those guys will slit your throat to rob you of 25 cents. The same goes for the bus.
Take a cab.

there are bus from hollywood to Los Angeles that
run all night (217 -which becomes a line 2 at Vermont
which will go into downtown LA
or take a bus along sunset as well
both will take into LA

If the local boogie men don't get you the police will at 3 A.M. It isn't brave to ask for trouble just careless. The area is hip deep in tough characters so think again. If you have to go into that area take a cab.

Yeah you should have doubts about safety there that time of night. It's very risky but doing doesn't mean that anything will happen to you. If you are drunk won't be able to defend yourself so I wouldn't risk it.

oh god no!!! you will either get shot, mugged, or something worst!! It really is not that safe to walk thro Mcarthur park during the day.

This is a HORRIBLE idea. Yeah, a cab is going to be a little pricey if you're on your own, but it is WELL WORTH it.
