I'd say its safe. Everytime my family goes out of country, we put out stuff in the hotel safe, places like cambodia and thailand. But of course we stayed are 4 star hotels were it is not so ghetto and is well maintained. It also depends on what kind of safe. Most of the time we used the ones where you put in your own code that only your code can unlock. and the only other way to open it is to use a key the hotel manager has, unscrew a 8 inch screw, do some electrical stuff, and then it opens. The hotel was big too so the chances of US out of hundreds of rooms getting jacked was pretty low. But theres other factors like, is there any reason for someone to suspect you have more then what is wanted ? like diamonds, MORE money, and other stuff compared to other hoteliers?

btw the only problems we had with the safe was it running out of batteries, so it didnt close, thats how i know the alternative way to open it. we had the same hotel manager come and fix it everytime, and we've grown a friendly bond with him and nothing was stolen either.

As in many countries you need to be able to identify yourself at all times it is not sensible to leave your passport in your hotel.
Better keep it in a money belt under your clothes.

I never used a hotel safe, most places I stay do not even have them. (So unless you travel 4 star hotels only, think about alternative ways to protect your things.)
