I have a cat who I've had for the past 5 or 6 years. He was the most affectionate and loving cat when I first got him as a kitten. I've moved house 3 times since getting him and the last time I moved house he didn't react well at all. I have another cat who I've only had for the past year or so - he is really affectionate and lovely.

Tobi, the trouble cat, now sits on the stairs ready to swipe whoever walks past. He has gotten very skinny and during the day sleeps under our house and has gotten bad fleas, even though we regularly treat him properly. The vet says there is nothing wrong with him, so I don't know what to do. He will walk through a room and just hiss at nothing in particular. I have to wake up at 3am to feed him because he won't eat when anyone else is around, and he is aggressive to my entire family except me.
My mother recently got a puppy, and this has only made the matter worse.

I know that you can train dogs, but I need to know how to train a cat! Please help!

Thanks for all the answers so far - I do treat him for fleas. I think he must be getting them from somewhere else but we get the good expensive stuff from the vet. I do know a lot about animals - I'm not totally clueless! The unfortunate thing is that I know a lot more about dogs than cats.

Tobi sleeps in my room and is affectionate then. But this doesn't change anything. He has the entire top level of the house to himself, and he owns the entire street (He is allowed outside)

The thing with him is that he never used to be a one person cat. It's only happened in the past 12 months. He used to get along really well with the other cat we have.

I'd really appreciate some answers considering that info if anyone has any. I understand it's a complicated issue... I really appreciate any help I can get!

Your cat is a one person cat. He does not want to share HIS house with anyone. You bring in another animals who he sees as his competition. He hates the dog and has made himself miserable living under the house. Take care of your cat. Make him feel loved. I have three cats and all have different personalities. The oldest one I have to spend more time alone time with. Cats are like people. Look at it from your cat's point of view. Fix up the fleas. Give him love. Give him his own dish, his own kitty litter box, his own space. Help him with his self esteem.

Sounds like your cat is angry with the instability. I am sure that he also is annoyed to go from being the number one kitty to having to compete- so he may have just given up. As far as the fleas- that certainly isn't anything he's doing to himself. You need to treat all the animals in your house with that monthly stuff from the vet--- also spray your whole house down and clean all your laundry in storage. Just sit in the same room with him for like an hour or two a day and do something, like read or work or whatever... just keep him around. It is all his disposition on life right now, also have you tried letting him outside? I know that letting your cat out sucks because then they always want out- but maybe he is just sick of everything (just like a person gets) and wants to experience something else. If you did that then you'd really need to upkeep on the flea treatment for both cats. If he starts getting worse and you quit spending the time on him I suggest you give him up and let someone who has the time to take care of him and bring him back to his loving self.

And how exactly does the vet know there's nothing wrong with him? Did he take blood tests? How thoroughly did he examine him exactly

Any vet that announces there's nothing wrong with a cat who has recently become skinny is a vet not worth going to again.

The behaviour thing could well be a reaction to being ill and feeling generally grotty. Certainly the cat does not sound healthy - please go to a different vet, one that's actually helpful!
