My 1 year old lab retriever went under general yesterday, to have his ears flushed and bloodwork done for allergies. We picked him up at 5pm but since he got back he's been straining and unable to poo. He's also been rubbing his **** along the floor a bit, but it cant be worms as he was wormed only 2 weeks ago. He seems to be in some distress over this as he is whimpering a bit... it's 16 hours later now.

We fed him when we got back yesterday but havent since...

Before going under anaesthesia, you need to fast. Thus, no food in your system. After anaesthesia, you need to have a small/bland meal, until your body fully gets itself back into the swing of things.

To top it off, you haven't fed him anything since.

So... he has very little food in his system (which is probably just starting to fully recoup itself), and the food he DOES have likely has very little fiber.

...I'd be worried if he WASN'T constipated. Go feed him... something with lots of fiber.

If this does not start to resolve itself by the time you read this reply then call the vet to find out what you can do. Constipation is a problem after general anesthesia. Humans are also plagued by it.

When our pup was constipated due to a new environment the vet suggested adding some canned pumpkin to his dog food. It did the trick!

try feeding him some prune juice or prunes- works for people, why not dogs? If it doesn't go away in a day or two, call the vet tho.
