I am looking to go back to school for nursing (I already have a B.S. in psychology). I am trying to get in to the ROTC for the air force; which my wife is not exactly thrilled about. I was told by the recruiter that the AF only deploys for four months (is this true?). My wife said that this did not matter because I could get deployed, come back for a week and get deployed again. Now, she was probably exagerating but how often do nurses get deployed and are all the deployments combat related?

I fully understand that my job while being an officer is to do whatever the AF requires me to do. I also understand that the past is not always the best indicator of what is going ot happen. I am just trying to see if anyone with first hand knowledge could tell me the frequency and duration of deployement even though this information is not necessarily going to be true in the future for me. Thank you

the 15 month deployments mentioned above are generally army and i think they may be now affecting marines as well......the AF general rule USED to be less than 6 months deployed home for 15 months but that has now changed......rotations are still scheduled for every 15 months but sometimes you go out of your "bucket" and get deployed early....and depending on your AFSC your deployment could only be 4 months.....but could be 6-12 (my husband goes 8 at a time with generally 5-6 months in between) i have a friend in the medical field who hasnt even been to iraq yet..2 years ago she deployed to thailand for 2 months (after the tsunami)....and she just got back from 4 months in spain. a guy that works with her though also just returned from 6 months in iraq (his 3rd time since mar 03)

Hey,

In reply to this question, How often are air force nurses deployed?, I can tell you that you might get some help from http://asknursingonline.com

As you described; "I am looking to go back to school for nursing (I already have a B.S. in psychology). All the Best :)

It is my understanding that the current US military deployments are for 15 months. They might move the aircrews around more, but the hospitals are not going to come and go.

Yeah i wouldn't trust what they say. Medical field MOS' are highly sought after for deployment while the war is going on.

That is what I have heard from other folks in the medical Field of the Military

you will deploy as often as you are needed for as long as you are needed to wherever you are needed.

There are no hard and fast rules. yes, you could deploy for longer than 4 months at a time, yes you could deploy frequently. yes you could deploy to a combat area.

Practically, will that be the case? who knows. Bottom line, if you are not willing to accept that possibility, even as an Officer and a Nurse, than do not join.
