They don't protect from direct hits from tank rounds either. They are only meant to offer protection from small arms, grenades and shrapnel from other explosive shells. Even if your helmet stopped the bullet, I would think you would likely get a broken neck assuming they could invent a helmet to stop a 50 cal.

You do realize that the only people that generally use the .50 is the US military right? They are extremely expensive as is the ammunition for them.

Besides a real sniper can just as well shoot you in the face with a .22 rather then use a .50 to shoot through your helmet.

Hathcock's tale can not be collaborated because he worked on my own so no human being changed into round to ensure what he did. He turned right into a good Marine, a more advantageous sniper and a real hero. there is not any way that some stupid t.v. coach might want to even commence to solid a doubt on something Hathcock has reported. If he reported he did it then he did it. quit searching for loopholes and merely settle for data. Hathcock turned right into a awesome shot and to that end if all he had a good seem at changed into the mirrored image of the different scope then he geared in the route of that a immediately fired. If both were aiming at one yet another then the attitude would were accurate.

Because the majority of deaths are caused my shrapnel. The current shape of modern (and early 20th century) military helmets was to protect the head from shrapnel wounds and POSSIBLY to reflect glancing bullets; no helmet has ever been made to be bulletproof.
The chances of current enemy forces having one of those high power sniper rifles is also quite low. Them knowing how to properly use them is even less likely.

Because the helmet is designed to stop deflect shrapnel and debris, of which more soldiers have a chance on being hit by.

No military helmet ever designed is bullet proof or has been issued with the claim of being "bullet proof"!!

And the military don't make the helmets they are produced by civilian firms to government specifications.

if the helmets were presenting a flat target there would be no point, but just like the back stop at the .22 range, it is the angle that deflects the bullet, if you were to take the fraction of a inch of steal at most rifle ranges, and lifted it up to face the shooter the bullets would pass through the back stop. so the benefit of the helmet is the reduction of the kill zone, its like trying to hit a golf ball compared to a watter melon

A sniper bullet is not the only thing that can kill you in the field. It's basic head protection from debris of all sorts, but mainly from falling debris after an explosion...wood, rocks, etc.... . They could were some kind of triple layered kevlar helmet and it wouldn't stop every type of bullet.

Because they figure some protection is better than none at all I reckon. How much would the "head gear" have to weigh to stop a 50 cal. bullet? Come on my man.....jeeze... you ever been in action?
What was the question you really wanted to ask?
You wanted to know why we are even over there in the place.
Just a shot in the dark.

Because they are very few .50 cal sniper rifles on a battle field. They weigh over 40 pounds.

combat helmets wont protect against m16's or AK's either but before the use of helmets in modern warfare one of the leading causes of death and injury was concussion and shrapnel hits on the head. helmets work very well against that particular threat.
