so that they could work out which direction to lay down a prayer mat .... would you lend them your wrist watch?

It's easy to work out the direction of North/South if the sun is shining and you know what time it is.

I'm unlikely to lend my watch to just anyone who asks.

But if asked and I can spare the time I'd certainly help them find the direction of North

We as muslims have a special compass which can show the direction of Kabaa in Mecca for determining the direction of our praying. It depends on where we live or stay.Kabaa will be in the North,South,West or East.In New York Kabaa is in the east, while in Iraq and Iran Kabaa is in the west.In Egypt Kabaa is the South East and In Indonesia Kabaa is in the North west.If we have the wrist watch which can show us the Kabaa direction we can use it for determining the direction of praying (prayer mat)

Certainly. It would do them no good as it's digital, however.

However, I would gladly lend them my phone so they could use Google Mobile Maps and the nearest road/intersection to determine the appropriate direction. I would, of course, not let them out of sight with my phone though.

As the suns declination changes on a day to day basis, the time and the sun are not always sufficient information to determine with sufficient precision which direction is north.

I would wish to offer every assistance to the Muslim that I could to ensure complete accuracy in their choice of direction.

Hell no, that's a stupid, foolish superstition, and I hope it fades out before we have a "Crusade of Reason"... ummm, or expand our war on terror. Still, that may have been condescending, but I believe all religions are pointless, and that christianity is unfairly judged as "more injust" in the west. We should learn more about the cruelties of Islam before it continues to spread like the plague that it is...
Quite peaceful observations, I am aware...

yes I would, and if the person had a sense of humor I wouldn't tell him the watch is broken.
