I would say adolescents are too old for trick or treating. Trick or treating is for children. It is not good for their emotional development. They need to learn to do activities that are appropriate for adolescents to do. Adolescents generally are more interested in attending costume parties. That is age appropriate for them. For children it wouldn't be age appropriate for them to attend a costume party. They are too young for that.

For developmentally disabled, it would be appropriate for them to go trick or treating even if they are adolescents or adults.

The 15 year old here went out trick or treating after taking about 4 years off. He got bored just handing out the candy, so he dressed up. That was the rule. He had to dress up, and think of a costume, because if he was just going to go out in regular clothes, then he wasn't going to be allowed.

Let him have fun. Halloween is a fun holiday and there shouldn't be such restrictions, as long as a kid is in school, and wears a costume let him go trick or treating, he's not hurting anyone.

This isn't really an answer, but I just heard someone say that they asked everyone how old they are and she refuses to give anything to kids over 12. I personally think that is ridiculous, because I work with adults who are developmentally disabled, and they also like to go trick or treating. So now we are going right back to discriminating because of age??? I think anyone who puts effort into dressing up and finding cool costumes should get to go trick or treat if they want to.

Kids around here don't really "trick or treat", there are too many other things going on like haunted houses, the malls have "safe trick or treat" EVERYONE dresses up, even the adults and while the adults shop the kids trick or treat the shops in the malls, the mall here also has two haunted houses, one "mild" and one not so mild depending on what one can handle. It beats going door to door mooching candy and getting "who knows what".

In our household, it has always been a rule that once there is a "teen" after your age...you are too old to Trick or Treat. I get very upset when teenagers come to my door, dressed like "teenagers" and expect candy for their "trouble." They could at least put a little effort into it. My kids have always enjoyed going out and having fun on Halloween, as long as there isn't police involved.

Why not wait until next year to decide? He'll grow up a lot in a year's time, so worrying about it now doesn't mean much. I personally think it's odd that he's not out of that stage, but that's just me. If he really wants to go next year, let him.

I would say 14ish unless they are taking younger siblings out, then I usually give them a treat too for their effort ;-). There was a guy who came around 'trick-or-treating FOR his kid brother'. Turns out he was 24...the idiot!

Awwwwwwww let him go. I can remember trick or treating with my friends. (really just getting into mischief) at this age. (water balloons, rolling yards, etc.) I would let him know that he can just go in his own neighborhood. (if it's safe) I see nothing wrong with it. However we really don't go house to house, we go to a "fall festival" now. (due to all the crazy's)

i guess i'd prefer when the teenage years hit like 13. but i don't see anything wrong with going past a year or so.
