In the distant past the term "Jew" originally referred to the descendants of Judah (one of the 12 sons of Abraham). But from there it was applied more broadly to any member of the Southern Kingdom of Israel. And from there the application of the term broadened to include any Israelite. In the New Testament St. Paul says he is a descendant of the tribe of Benjamin and yet he calls himself a "Jew". So, yes, in the ancient use of the term Moses is not a Jew. But in the generally accepted use of the term (for over 2000 years now) Moses is a Jew.

The term "Jew" comes from "Judahite", meaning a member of the tribe of Judah, one of Israel's twelve sons. When the Northern Kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians in 722 BCE, their national identity was destroyed as they were mixed with populations from other conquered countries. This left the Southern kingdom, predominantly Judahites, to carry on the religion and nationhood. When the Southern kingdom was toppled by Babylon, the exiles effectively became the sole representation of their faith, which became "Judaism".

Moses predates either kingdom, so he would have been called an Israelite, not a "Jew". Being of the tribe of Levi, he could also have been called a Levite.

The founder of what came to be known as Judaism is considered to be Abraham, but he was the grandfather of Jacob, so he would not even have been called an Israelite.

Moses was born a Hebrew. Technically the 'Jewish people' as a nation united under a covenant were created at Sinai. Clearly then, considering the role he played at Sinai, Moses was a Jew. But you are grasping at semantic straws. Moses was a hebrew. So Moses was a Jew. Abraham may not have known the word 'Jew' but he was surely the patriarch of Judaism.

this is ridiculous...... Juda was not the head of the other tribes .... the priest were levites, from the tribe of levi, but as usual it always comes back to Men wanting their own selfish way and they seemingly enough are willing to sacrifice their souls for their egos.... Judaism joined the ranks of the other world religions when they became the self appointed rulers of the world and started KILLING FOLKS WHO DON'T AGREE....
ALSO the other tribes ARE NOT LOST... These folk that are running the world KNOW EXACTLY WHO AND WHERE THESE PEOPLE ARE... ! IN FACT THEY ARE AT WAR WITH THEM NOW , KILLING THERE OWN BROTHERS AND SISTERS AS USUAL....

Funny thing is that you pakistanis are so proud of your islamic faith, when you don't even realise that the reason you are muslim to begin with is because your ancestors were not strong enough to defend themselves. You are decsendents of losers and eunuchs. You all were beaten into islam like one beats a dog into discipline.

And for all the love that you have for your religion, the first, true and original muslims (the arabians) regard you as third rate muslim and still don't accept you as equals. LOL

as the hindi saying goes: "dhobi ka koota na ghar ka na ghat ka".

the ummah doesn't want you and neither does the civilisation that your loser ancestors were once part of. Just go and die you muslim racist.

Let me try and make this simple for you: LABELS DON'T MATTER.

The Israelites were Jewish. There's no confusion.

Hagar, an Egyptian, may or may not have been Jewish but she got a wife for her son from Egypt (Genesis 8:21) and there is no indication that *she* is Jewish, and therefore Ishmael's **children** are not Jewish.

**You** do some reading.
