People are paid based upon the scarcity of their skills. Very few people have the talents and skills to be a physician, therefore physicians are paid very well. Very many people have the skills to work at McDonald's including physicians. Therefore the potential supply is huge and so pay is small.

Why are musicians paid poorly; think of how many people took band in high school? Reading music and playing an instrument is a widely held talent. Why are a few paid highly? Because they sing or play a song that many want to hear, but intellectual property laws limit who can sing it. So those number one bands become rich.

Why does illiteracy tend to go hand in hand with poverty?

Because, of 300 million people all are illiterate or better. Being illiterate places you in the widest possible pool of workers. Everyone who can read can also do jobs that do not require reading. The only way an illiterate person can work is to bid their wages well below the literate, otherwise literate people would fill those roles.

The consequences are of course obvious.

"Give a man a fish..."

My dad has always said that if you know how to read, you can LEARN how to do ANYTHING, but if you can't read...

I figure that if I know how to read, as Dad said, then I can learn any other skill. Those who have other skills have written books, and I can learn from them without ever having met them!

On the other hand, if I don't know how to read, then my opportunities (and ability) to learn are much more limited. There are resources that wouldn't even be available to me because of my own illiteracy.

The Development Gateway links to many resources that talk about how illiteracy contributes to poverty. For instance, if a person can't read, it will be very difficult for that person to learn a trade or learn new skills in order to move up to higher income jobs. The person won't be able to read employment contracts or leasing contracts, meaning that it will be difficult for he or she to be able to ensure fair treatment. It's difficult to budget if you cn't read. You also can't read newspapers or bulletin board postings announcing legislation changes, job openings, free or low-cost health services, and on and on.

Education is the only way out of poverty. It's a simple concept. Educated people are employable. Illiterate people are not.
