The average cat spends around a third of their waking day grooming. Not only does it keep their skin and fur in good condition, it's also very therapeutic in relieving stress.

Sometimes cats will over-groom to the point of licking themselves bald. If he hasn't been seen by a vet recently, then it's worth taking him for a check-up as there could be an underlying health problem such as parasites, allergies or even food intolerance. If your vet can rule out health problems, then he may be doing it because he is feeling stressed. Sometimes if a cat is feeling anxious, they use grooming as a comforting diversionary activity rather than facing up to the problem. If this is the case, then you need to establish the source of the stress, then either eliminate or reduce it. Whenever he begins grooming, you need to divert his attention to another activity like playing. Spend time with him and brush him, so that he still benefits from the comfort of being groomed, without him getting over zealous doing it himself. Your vet may decide to fit him with an Elizabethan collar to help break the habit.

The web article below on Lick Dermatitis has lots of information that might help you in the meantime.

HMMM this happened to one of my cats when i was about 10 or 11 years old... we took our cat to the vet and he just said he had luekimia.
when we found our cat he was a stray who had obviously been kicked out by his owners and they had not treated him because he was pretty much bold and was still losing hair and itching.
at first the docter said it might had been skin cancer and that we would have to give him tablets to make him better but the tablets did'nt work and eventually they worked out it was luekimia.

In the end we put the cat down cause it was probably the nicest thing to do since he had horrible luekimia.
Sorry but i think your cat might have it too :(

If you've found out any more about your cat's problem from me feel free to add me.

also i love to recieve thank you notes too :)

Good Luck

Could well be hormonal, this can cause them to lose hair. I think perhaps you should go to a vet. You can't buy medications at pet stores, they aren't licensed to sell them. Also you need to know what's causing this, because it could be many things.

"Bought meds" - what does that mean? Some random itch cream off a drug store shelf? How about going to a v-e-t to see what's going on?
