I know that recently more and more people have been caught and sued for downloading media files illegally. I was wondering if there was a way to find out if a DVD had been burned previously, and if so, how do companies like blockbuster and netflix find out?

Hack no. They can't figure it out whether a DVD had been copied other not. You are making a copy or ripping the video off and you are not doing anything to the original disk. Off course, this provided that you will be able to make a copy and retrieve contents from the DVDs, which has copy protections on it. Those protections are not complete solutions so there are ways to go around them.

As for how to do it? Well, I never tried since I don't feel the need to. Yet, if you were successful in retrieving the content, and choose to distribute in DVD or digital formats, that is when Blockbuster and movie studio can try to come after you if they can pinpoint you of course.

They shouldn't be able to legally. They would have to be spying on your computer, which is against the law in most countries.

The only reason that people have been caught downloading, is because another company has the right to see what you are currently doing on the P2P software. But they do not have the right to spy on your system.
