If the leader of my religion said to do it, I would stand proudly and loudly say f*** you.
If my Bible said to do it, I would burn the book.
If my child needs me, at any age between 0 and 100, I would drop everything I was doing, day or night, and help as soon and as best as I can.
Also, that day my religion or Bible says that, is the last day I would ever step into a house of worship, read the Bible, or believe in any God.

Disfellowshipment or Ex-communication is the ultimate sanction in a church and I do approve of the practice but I never heard it used for someone marrying outside the church. The usual causes for sexual immorallity is: Divisiveness (splitting up the unity of the church, usually by means of spreading slander or deliberately stirring up trouble eg real life trolling) Sexual Immorality (any kind of sex outside of marriage) Drunkenness The procedure is usually to give someone a private warning for a first offence, a warning in front of one or at the most two witnesses for a second offence, a public warning in front of the whole church for a third offence and finally if the practice continues the chruch disfellowships/excommunicates the member (that is to say refuse to acknowledge them as a member of the church). It is however usual for a person of mature faith to maintain contact with the disfelowshipped/excommunicated person in order to give them an opportunity to return should they decide they want to stop doing the thing that caused them to be disfellowshipped/excommunicated. I can't see how that would apply to marriage though as the bible and every church I ever heard of is to a greater or lesser degree against divorse, so once a person is married they can't get un-married. Even under the ultimate sanction of disfellowshipment/excommunication a parent is not expected to disown their children, just not acknowledge them as a christian, people are still expected to be civil to unbelievers. I have heard of parents of fundamentalist relgious movements doing extremely crazy things to their grown up children like disowning them due to not being able to cope with the emotional pain of watching their children grow up to be a disappointment and an embarrassement. I beleive this is because the parents feel their children are a living reminder of the mistakes they made as parents. That is not to excuse their actions they are completely inappropriate, I only say this so that you understand why.

FROM SUCH AS THESE TURN AWAY IN THESE LAST DAYS
2Tim.3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

That situation sounds more like a family dispute than a religious dispute.
The Bible says that those that don't take care of their own children are WORSE than those that don't believe at all.
So the Christian faith would require you to take care of those children, thus no need to abandon the faith. So yes, if I had a religion that requires that I do wrong by my own family then I'll most certainly leave!

Wow, I am sorry that happened to your cousin. I hope things worked out for her in the end.
I would never disown my children (my hypothetical children). I created them and by doing that I pledged to take care of them until the end of time, no matter what. I am so glad I dont believe to a religion that would ask me to do such insanity.

Uh, the Old Testament said to execute a child who disobeyed his parents...
I doubt my church would do such a thing... or any Christian church for that matter (the excommunication I mean--though I also know for a fact that they would never advocate killing the kid).
It is really sad that there are churches that do not teach forgiveness, considering that in God's eyes all sin is equal--their 'minor' indiscretions are just as damning as the most evil act imaginable

jehovah's witnesses?
they're strict, even for a cult, but you have to admire their discipline even if it is programmed into them. at least they try to adhere to their bible 100% unlike other "true" christians
EDIT:

Mic 7:5 Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.
Mic 7:6 For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies [are] the men of his own house.
Mic 7:7 Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
Mic 7:8 ¶ Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD [shall be] a light unto me.

That's a church thing, certainly not a bible thing.
My family is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more important than any church or their opinions.

the Bible says love one another
forgive each other
as much as you can, have no strife with any person
I am horrified that she was treated that way. Love is always the best answer.
