I don't really think that there is a reason.
That's why I believe everyone should be allowed to believe as they want.
Remember that case where all those people were found dead in that mansion.
They called it mass suicide and said they thought god was coming for them in a space ship.
But was it really mass suicide or was it the largest mass murder / suicide in history.
All those people followed that old man and he would die anyway and had promised that God was coming for them.
He may have decided his following was coming to an end and poisoned them all including himself to save face.
What an asss he was.
And then there is the writer of Left Behind.
This fool caused school shootings and other deaths because people couldn't deal with the end of time in september 1999.
I knew that was a joke, I mean half the stuff that is supposed to happen first hasn't happened if any of it has.
Well I guess I did end up giving two reasons why some people shouldn't believe after all.
And then there is the Westboro Baptist church.
Enough said on that one.

In my observations, the most important reason by far is the feeling of independence and freedom that it gives. Many atheists began to question the existence of God at just about the same time as they began to look for independence from their parents. Not a coincidence, I think. Later they add on little justifications that bolster the decision they had already made.
We don't seek or reject any god but our Creator. He would be the only One that we would care about. The FSM and pink unicorns are the products of sophistry.
The choice is to seek our Creator because of the love He must have had in creating us, or to reject our Creator because of the authority that He would have our how we live our lives.

One needs no reason not to believe. We are increasingly programmed that way. The God-gene (that ability to accept unquestioningly any authority figue) was necessary to keep early hominid children safe from the many dangers that surrounded them (The child who didn't ask why when an elder said "Do not swim in the river with the crocodiles," lived longer than the child who said, "Phooey. I do what I want!") Now that we have evolved from that point, it is often better to question authority. Everything boils down to Darwin eventually.

To save lives. Those that do believe in god can be persuaded to kill in his name.
