It depends whether they are a danger to themselves or others. Just having a mental illness doesn't mean a person should live in a hospital, but sometimes you need acute care that you can't get in the community. I do think that there needs to be better community care so that fewer people get to the point that they need hospital care, though. Lack of adequate care leads to too many people reaching a crisis point so that they are hospitalized. But there are times when people do have good care and they still need more help than community resources can provide.

It depends on the type of mental illness. That's a broad spectrum phrase. For instance, my mum, has been mentally ill to the point of trying to kill her children when we were young, she used to tell us we were sick and dying of illnesses we didn't have, she tells us SHE's sick with illnesses she doesn't have, and has been known to purposely hurt herself and others especially when in a rage for attention. Does she need to be hospitalized heck yeah! But then I had a brother who was mentally disabled. He had the rationality of a 4 year old. He couldn't speak much and was diagnosed with epilepsy and autism. Did he need to be hospitalized? No. They put him in a hospital and he just declined. Eventually, when the funds ran out, they released him and they were just starting assisted living programs back then(group homes for mentally disabled people who could function in society) and he did so much better and he thrived and he made friends and even had a job and hobbies! He didn't need a hospital. So it really depends on the type of illness. IF someone is a threat to themselves or those around them YES lock em up! If they aren't, then no. Our world doesn't need to "hide the crazy people" we need to love those that are different.

Patients with psychopathologies that require hospitalization must receive it. Psychiatric institutes are specialized in the treatment of patients with mental illnesses and many are cured.
