When exactly do recruiters get paid? When I interview with the company or when I get hired? How can I negotiate when the recruiter has set a "max" for the job? And can I negotiate with the company directly? I don't want to sign the contract if I feel that the recruiter is low balling my salary...I hear you can make more if you don't use the recruiter.

I was told that a recruiter will get a huge commission if they low ball you because they "take" the rest of whatever the salary the employer offered...then again that doesn't make sense now that I am writing it down...how would the recruiter get the rest of a year long salary? I've never dealt with a recruiter before, so I am clueless...

Why would a recruiter low ball a salary when they are paid as a percentage of your salary? It is my understanding that they make up to 20% of your salary. Once a recruiter introduces you to a company, you are on the hook with the recruiter as well so negotiating with a company is not an option.

You are right... you should make more money not using a recruiter. When a company decides that they need another employee, the first thing that they do is determine the budget for this employee. The recruiter fee is taken right off the top for the budgeted salary for the employee. So if you don't use a recruiter, you in theory could increase your salary by up to 20%.

I'm not sure what kind of contact you are talking about, I never had to sign anything like that with a recruiter. I think the recruiters get a percentage of your salary, and they don't get paid unless you are hired. It is in their interest to get you more money since their commission is higher. However, since they get nothing if you don't get the job, I think it is possible that they could low ball your salary so there is more of a chance that you will be hired and they will get something rather than nothing.

If the company doesn't use a recruiter it costs them less to fill the position. Perhaps you could use that to negotiate more money if you are competing with other candidates that are using a recruiter, but most likely the company will just want to pocket the savings and it won't help you get more money. But if they are pocketing the savings it should give you a slight advantage because hiring you would cost them less without a recruiter.

Not at all - recruiters are paid a percentage of your salary, so it is in their best interest to get you the highest paying job.

You are not able to discuss anything with the company until you are hired. I say act as if you are interviewing with the company, and know that the recruiter is on your side; they only get paid for making successful placements. If you don't like the offers you are getting, find a new recruiting company to work with.
