I know a lot of people on here (Christian, and athiests alike) have very strong views, and sometimes when I ask questions on here I get negative replies.

So, honestly, do you believe that you are respectful to other people's religions? And have somewhat of an open mind, while still keeping your religious beliefs?

I myself am Chrsitian, but contrary to popular belief I am not trying to convert athiests into believers! And likewise, I know some athiests who don't try and push their views on Christians.

I respect other people...I care enough about them to want them to accept Christ before they die. If I didn't want to share the truth with others, then I would have to question my own understanding and beliefs within the frame work of Christianity. Why would I be okay with someone else dying and going to hell? Just so I could respect their religion while here on earth? Seems like a cop out to me.

I like your question and answer , I am also a christian and I know a lot of people that say they are tolerant but they also push and say that they want to share the gospel and as you said convert athiests into belivers, I tell them simply this to look up the book of andrew one of the twelve disiples , and they say there isn't one , exactly but you know he was a disciple and you know he brought people to Jesus, he went and in John12;20-22 he brought greeks to Jesus who were despised at the time by pious jews, there is not one record of him performing one miricle, writing a gospel, and the big one never PREACHING one sermon, yet we hear of him thousands of years later through others words of them bringing them to christ. he was our example of a great way to share the word , with everyday life and not a lot of telling what is and isn't.no man can make anyone a beliver only christ has that power ,so all we can do is send the invite , and above all else love, I belive in christ with all my heart and soul and when someone disagrees I am not going to treat them with an attitude of judgement ,that would go against what Jesus was about, I can share , with respect not comprimise my faith and let the other person share ,and then if we belive the bible the rest chrst does those who beat people up are trying to do ehat only one perfect man did along time ago, great question, i have a blog you should look at

I use equal standards on everyone.

If someone expresses a harmful (eg. racist) attitude, I'm not going to 'respect' rather than attack it, whether or not it is also part of their religion.

Of course, mainstream beliefs are usually completely fine.

I don't try to convert people to my own (atheist here :)) thoughts about religion, and to be completely honest, I don't even want people to have my views on religion.

In other words, I balance the need to allow freedom of thought with the need to do my bit to ensure the reduction of harm, and I do so in a way that is not biased toward or against any particular choice of religion.

I DO respect others religions. I also am a Christian but I do not try to shove that down peoples throats because they don't believe as I do. I believe that winning people to Christ is more of an example thing and if I am constantly criticizing them then I am just as guilty (even more) as they are for being judgemental. I am not judgemental as that is not my job (and I am glad).

Yes. The only time I have a problem is when someone:

1-- Claims to be better than others because they have a "better" religion.
2-- Blatantly insults someone's beliefs and calls it a "question".
3-- Or pushes their ideas onto the rest of us and tells us that if we don't believe we're going to Hell.

Otherwise, believe what you want, it's fine with me.

Agnostic.

I respect the right of people to hold any religious belief they want. But as for the beliefs themselves, I respect them based on my assessment of their merit. And I've found few religions that show me much of anything deserving of respect.

Yes, I think that every one has the right to believe (or not believe) as they wish. Religion is a very personal and intimate part of the human Psyche. No one should be made to feel uncomfortable about their choice of faith.

I'm happy to respect people and their physical needs.

I'm not inclined to respect their ideas if such ideas can be tested and demonstrated to lack genuine utility in human society. For example, I see no need to respect bible-belief in a 6000 year old earth. That is an idea I can reasonably NOT respect.

Ideas can and should be tested in the marketplace of ideas. A competition between differing ideas is healthy. Ideas that cannot survive should be discarded in the dustbin of history.
