Freedom is the ability to choose. Choice is not really choice unless it is informed choice.... ie knowing what the consequences of the action will be (or may be).
The truth sets us free to choose the consequences that naturally result from our actions. Choosing the right thing creates inner and outer harmony and joy, and enlarges our souls. For each right choice, we increase our power to choose (ie freedom) because we also qualify ourselves to receive a greater degree of truth.
See Isaiah 28:13 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/isa/28/9-13#13
2 Nephi 28:29-30 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_ne/28/29-30#29
Choosing the wrong thing creates confusion. The knowledge that we had received becomes muddled and confused.
However, confusion is removed, and truth is restored, when we acknowledge that we have chosen wrongly (ie repent) and try again to live in accordance with truth.
Truth sets us free because when we live it, our souls and minds enlarge, and we begin to see things as they really are... and therefore are more able to make choices that will bring joy and peace.

Our culture is so filled with different philosophies that most folks don't know what to believe, so they make up their own truth. They say 'truth is what's right for me'. But that doesn't necessarily make it truth. Real truth has to be an absolute. A lot of folks don't think there is such a thing as absolute truth. But there is. It is absolutely true that we will all die one day. It is absolutely true that there is no air in space.
There are spiritual absolute truths too. When you know that you know something is real, that it's not some fairy tale made up by someone else, then it is something you can put all your hopes and dreams upon, because you know it is something you can trust will not disappear the next day.
Those who believe in God understand that He is the one true reality in this crazy world. Someday we will step off this earth into God's reality, which was the original. It's kind of like the movie 'The Matrix". Everyone was in a dream world until one guy woke up and found that the world he thought was reality, wasn't reality at all. That's what the truth does for us. It wakes us up, and helps us realize what is really worth living for. If you know that you know that you KNOW when you die, you will meet God, wouldn't it be important to know what His rules and expectations are? He IS the truth. Knowing Him allows us to know what's real in the world, and knowing the truth behind all this chaos allows us to be free to choose correctly, instead of blindly trying this path or that path, hoping that maybe someday, we might reach 'Nirvana' or be one with the universe' or MAYBE find God or some dumb stuff like that
.
Knowing God sets us free from uncertainty, from bad choices, and gives us goals and hope. That's FREEDOM.

It is like being in a prison and not just attaining a key but becoming the very key to your Freedom (releasing that the key has been right before you the whole time, but you must know that you are in a prison first). To know is more then one who has knowledge, to know is to be directly acquainted and is more of an continuous epiphany. This moment increases your capacity to DO, and since you have knowing with your works the Light in them is magnified as you now can overcome what has defeated you unknowingly.
Knowing the Truth, being in the know in a sense releases you from the constraints that bound you, where you are no longer subjected in ignorance to that which pervaded you. You are freed from the past condition that ruled you. Although this never ends until you become the Truth, because there is always something to overcome, always some laws which must be circumvent and passed through.
Ever here of Plato's allegory of the Cave. How did knowing this individual prisoner was a prisoner, that he dwelt in a cave where he thought the shadows were real, and etc, how did coming to consciousness and awareness, knowing of his conditions and what he was within propel this individual into the truth that was manifest in the sun that he saw for the first time when he escaped? There are levels to this knowing, having this knowing one is then brought to awareness of whom they are, what they are in, and what they must do in order to be free. You gain capacity in knowing.

Truth is a two edge sword. Knowing it can set you free, but also the knowledge of it could also make you a prisoner. The key is how you use the truth that will set one free or make one a prisoner to it....

another way of saying- to see through the veil of illusion
the illusion is we are all seperate, seperate from each other and seperate from the One- or God
beyond that, there are many different minor interpretations that also have validity
knowing the truth about yourself- sets you free from being caught in mind stuff- conditioned behavior
knowing the truth about any circumstance you are stuck in- sets you free from it- ex. an unrequited love, hiding a painful truth from someone in hopes they don't feel pain- etc...

They say that knowledge is power. So it would be even better if that knowledge was true.
With that truth, no one can pull one over on you. So in a way, it sets you free...

If you know the truth about yourself and the world, then you have the clear vision. You can see every person and event for what they really are and can deal with each accordingly.
You can transcend your separated ego/self and its self-based emotions like attraction, repulsion, anger, hate and fear, and deal in a balanced, compassionate, loving and just manner towards all.
Knowing the truth makes you free to be what you really are.

Jesus is the real truth, and when you know Him, He sets you free. That is where that statement came from, and I believe it, because Christ has set me free.

You can live your truth with passion. There's no confusion about why you are here and what you are meant to do. You have a clear conscience....
It's like trying to describe to someone the difference between polluted air and fresh air or contaminated water and fresh spring water.
If you are only used to polluted air and contaminated water - you don't realize you are missing anything better.
But if someone ever offers you a cup of spring water and unlimited fresh air you would be wise to take it...
