A promise ring? An engagement ring is a promise ring. The ring symbolizes a promise to marry the person. A promise ring to promise to get engaged? Doesn't make much sense.

Promise rings are generally given out as a promise that you'll get engaged later. Not as binding. Usually given when to young to get engaged...or if you know that you don't want to get married for a long time. I know someone that gave his gf a promise ring and said "a promise that I'll always love you" that way he's not commited to the whole marriage thing.

It is a promise for future engagement. It means that you promise that you two will always be together. I've seen many different promise rings. I've seen diamonds and birthsones. I think it is what ever you like and he knows about .

I've always viewed a promise ring as a promise for future (but not immediate) engagement.

It is not about the content of a promise ring, but rather the 'promise' of marriage in the future. It is the thought more than the value of the ring.

Its a promise to be faithful to each other, and that there is a future for you. Its kind of like a trial engagement.

A promise ring is a ring indicating a serious promise made to oneself or to another. It may be given to a romantic partner to signify a commitment to a monogamous relationship, without a more lasting bond such as marriage. Lovers mostly exchange promise rings to indicate their commitment to the relationship they have.
Promise rings are bestowed to symbolize a promise that one person makes to another. In some cases, promise rings are precursors to engagement rings. While the latter symbolize a promise to marry, promise rings can stand for many other kinds of vows.
* Promise rings can mean: "I will be faithful to you"
* Promise rings can mean: "I will return to you"
* Promise rings can mean: "I will keep a specific promise to you"
* Promise rings can mean: "I will keep your secret"
* Promise rings can mean: "I love you"
* Promise rings can mean: "My intention is to marry you, but I'm not yet ready to become engaged"
* Promise rings can mean: "I will save my virginity for you"
* Promise rings can mean: "We are best friends"
* Promise rings can mean: "I will always be there for you"
* Promise rings can mean: "You are my one and only Valentine"
* Promise rings can mean: "I promise to abstain from a vice (gambling, drinking, smoking)"
* Promise rings can mean: "I promise to replace this ring with a (larger) diamond one as soon as I can afford it"
Both men and women can give promise rings.

Its mostly a promise to get engaged later on when posible and a promise to stay, love them, etc. I have one, it's a silver band with a small diamond.
