I would rather just buy them tons of candy, and have the dress up and have to find the candy hidden throughout the house or something...
Atleast then I wont have to worry if some freak tried to kill them.
Is this a smart idea, or just over protection?

baby, I'm 18...
My parents checked my candy when I was little...I was like...................what??? Lemme eat it already!
But I probably will just take them to family and close friends...that way if they try to kill my kids, i'll just kill them...lol jk.

Over protection. The whole halloween candy thing was an urban legend. Trick or treating is fun.
EDIT:
That family and neighbor thing may not be such a good idea...

What a lot of parents do is: they go trick or treating with the kids and they go only to homes of ppl they know. The other alternative is to throw a Halloween party and give them a bag of candy. Hiding the candy and making it into a treasure hunt sounds like fun. No, you are not overprotective, just a good parent to be.

depends on where you live. If you live in a big city where there's lots of drugs and criminals, then you're not being over protective. But if you live in a small town chances are it's probably pretty safe. I would recommend you tag along in the background if you're worried, or send them to a church party, where they pass out candy and play games. They will resent you if you don't let them have fun like the rest of their friends by keeping them home. There are other ways to be safe.

I wasnt' allowed to go trick or treating when i was younger, and my mother in law says she takes them to candy store, and then just let them pick out the candy that way the still got to "go out and get it" but they also got what they wanted and it was safe, also just have halloween partys so they can dress up, and give it to them there,

I have two teenagers now, and they still like to trick or treat- when they were little I went with them. It is just fun- of course I would never allow my kids when they were small to go to a strangers door alone , Halloween or not. You can be protecting without smothering. My parents when I was growing up as over protecting as I thought they were, let me trick or treat, with them of course. You can be wise, and still let kids, when and if you have them enjoy the fun of trick or treating.

Sounds good. A Halloween Party at home with lots of friends over to hide TONS of candy for the little ones. Decorate your home spooktacular and use one room with blue light and decorate with smoke (smoke machine), spiders, web, bats, skeletons etc and give them each a flash light to enter. Cake, cupcakes, cookies.
They'll have a ball, won't even think of going house to house.

Oh come on...I took my (Mormon) kids out last night and we had GALLONS of fun! You go to people you know and you go with friends. And any candy that's not wrapped gets pitched in the garbage.
I can't tell you how much fun it was to watch my little daughter run around in a little tiny lion costume and knock on peoples' doors and have them say "oh, look at her!!!" and then watch her ham it up. It was so cute!!! You really want to deprive yourself of that?

Have you ever heard the saying "What you seek you shall find", or words to that affect. Don't look for trouble and you will a less fearful life.
Keep your children away from trick and treating. They will love you for it. Why, because all their friends are having a exciting, happy time, that night, all dressing up and excited, and you are keeping them home because YOU ARE fearful.
Yes, I think they will appreciate that. They will thank you for keeping them separate and different, especially to their friends..

I found trick or treating really fun when I was a kid but I do agree that it would be much safer and still fun if you hid the candy. I think that is a good idea.

well you could go with them when they went trick or treating.(just stand behind them when they are at the door thats what my parents did)
if your going to hide candy and get them dressed up you might as well take them outside and let them experience the whole thing.
