My band is playing a regular Saturday night paid gig at a club. That night happens to be my wifes birthday. Do you think it's okay to use the occassion as a surprise birthday party? She will just think she's going to another gig. My concerns are (1) since we're being paid for the gig - it's almost like the club owner is paying for our party. On the other hand, the party will generate several customers (family and friends) who may or may not have shown up otherwise. (2) I know the club owner, and they would say "no problem" if I asked. I just want an objective outside opinion first.

You really don't want her to end up feeling like your gig is priority (even if it is) and that you are going cheap and easy rather than something personal where your focus is on her. Can you give her a shout-out during the gig though and tell them she is the love of your life? Just don't tell her age!

THEN make Friday nite or Sunday all about her and do something that may be out of your comfort-zone. That is what will "wow" her.

Would members of the public still be able to come into the club? Or would the event become a private party?

If it was NOT a private party, it sounds like it could work, but you may wish to suggest to the owner that you either contribute something towards the cost of the evening or take a smaller fee than usual.

As you know them, the owner may well say "Don't bother", but at least the offer is on the table and you cannot be accused of using your connection.

If it's to be a 'private' party, that is quite different.

Cheers ;-)

My husband is a drummer, and he too has played gigs on my birthday! club owner said "not a problem" actually more people the better. My husband has always got there early to set up a table with balloons, reserved sign, flowers.... also it makes you feel very special when the band announces that it's my birthday. What a great party, live band, and lots of people!!!

It all sounds good, but ask the club owner just the same and make sure the owner knows that the show will go on like always and the party won't take away from the show.

And Happy Birthday to your wife!

Ask the owner of the club. Let him know what you want to do.

I think the best thing to do is talk to the owner and then everything will be cool.
