Since I got responses from non-believers w/ my last question (who didn't need to answer in the first place if they don't believe) I just want to know...Why do you not believe in God? and When did this happen, was it a certain event or have you not believed since you were a child?

What if anything would make you a believer of God?

You guys are not telling me what kind of "proof" you need to believe. I believe because I know mankind did not evolve from monkeys or the Earth didn't come about in the "Big Bang Theroy." As my previous question implies, God has done many miraclous things in my life and I just can't believe that it's just my "luck."

lol! Monkeys and Apes are in the same category as each other. Primates! Apes and Humans are not! If we evolved from them why are they still around? Only the "special" ones could evolve to humans? Come on! Now that sounds stupid!

Well I was born into an atheist family, but I was always curious. I grew up reading about all sorts of religions (out of personal interest and my exploratory nature), including Christianity. I always had an open mind. After extensive research, I determined the concept of god was a man made concept. It would take pages and pages of typing to explain this process in detail.

I think you would better understand where we are coming from by addressing some of your reasons for believing in god. In your question, you hinted at the question of complexity in the universe (how can it be so complex without god) and the existence of miracles (god creates miracles in our lives, not luck).

Both of these arguments that you give have names. The first being "Argument from Design" and the latter being "Argument from Miracles". Put both these terms in google and learn about the atheist's side and how we respond to these arguments. You don't have to agree, but at least you may somewhat understand where we are coming from.

The Original Heretic's experience is very much like my own. I became atheist when I started to look into and examine my religion and others. Ultimately, it was reading the Bible without blindly agreeing with it that made me start to become skeptical and eventually led me to atheism. After that it became clear that there was no god and even it's possibility was completely unreasonable and illogical.

And you're absolutely right, Humans didn't evolve from monkeys. Humans are apes, we and the rest of the modern apes share a common ancestor. It seems that religious folks are the only ones that believe we came from monkeys.

Holy crap, you're daft.

Monkeys and apes may be related, but they're different. Homosapiens are in the Order Primate, genius, just like other apes and monkeys. We evolved along side of modern apes and monkeys from a common ancestor.

If an entity created all of the heavens how could we possible think we have some understanding of this entity. I think we should learn to talk to the creatures here before we try talking to this creator.
this part where there is free will and god has a plan conflict. I mean god has A plan for me. I choose to do something other. now he has to rewrite the plan for me and those I have contact with and those ect ect ect.
If god is watching over me and knows my heart why the need for prayer. He should know when I'm getting close to a cross road.
Why does heaven have a social structure.
7- and there are 7 planets visible to the naked eye.
I won't enjoy heaven if they play country music all the time.
will we be re-united with loved ones in heaven or will we forget so as not to be troubled by those who didn't make it.
The earth was the center of all - humans are center of attention
mostly because the world was flat and people died for god's sake for saying otherwise.

Given the social presumptions the word "God" carries, I do not believe in God, because the higher power that animates this world is not some kind personal friend who will motivate you in times of need. God will not magically save me out of some situation, because I am responsible for my predicament.

Besides, the very typical atheist justifications for theological rebellion: if God really exists, where is He? Why can't I see him? Because I'm not pure enough to see him? Blah. You're seeing this thing called God because you're crazy, and I'm not seeing him because I'm normal and healthy. And if God really is "omnipresent", then there's no point to the whole concept of God, because God then becomes just another word for "everything". If God exists in some section of the universe, where is it? I can't go there because I'm damned? Blah. He was supposed to be the "supporter of the universe", right? So how does he do this supporting? What are his attributes? If he doesn't have any attributes, how do you even know he is there? Because you think, just plainly intuitively, that he is there? Blah.

... and so on. You get the idea.

I was forced into christianity as a child with no choice. When i was about 11 i decided to question things in scripture class and got in trouble for it, this made me think even more. I started doing research and realised i was being forced into believing in someone who was not there, there was no proof. There is no proof. I only believe in what i can see, hear, touch, smell and feel. Because that is what is really there. Why should i waste so much time sitting in a room praying to someone who isn't there? There are so many people out there suffering.... there is no god.

Because I can't force myself to. It's the same reason that you don't believe in Thor or unicorns.

I used to believe in God, I was a Catholic as a child. I read the Bible many times, and went to both saturday and sunday school. I accepted Jesus and repented any sins that a ten year old can. But after a while I just realized that it didn't make sense to me at all. The Bible and the teachings were all contradictory, like love and hate. It just didn't seem real, like Santa and the Easter Bunny.

Today I'm something like Agnostic-Pagan. I don't mind other peoples' beliefs as long as they aren't trying to affect my life with their ideas or pushing their beliefs onto me. Everyone has a right to their own ideas.

Hes just not there,he hasn't proveh hes there to me.Since I was 5 I think it was.First time I ever went to church,I heard what they said,it made me sick.i just couldn't believe what hey where saying.I knew no other religion back then so I just left it.It might be because of my high I.Q. that I so easily saw that its fake and what they are teaching was not right.I thought for myself,I thought what they said through and just saw the fakeness.

Edit:By the way i'm 14 and I have an I.Q. of over 126 so I can easily comprhend things but I'm dislexix which restricts me a little.

was brought up in a christian home, I started seeing the holes in theology and the bible. I tried praying for guidance earnestly for a year, but my doubts kept growing. After researching christianity and other religions, I accepted that religion was man-made and god does not exist.

No traumatic event. Just the development of rational thinking skills.

Edit -- What would make me a believer? Any shred of scientifically supported evidence, or any kind of personal experience with this deity. Preferably both.

Edit again -- Let me ask you this, then ... why does God do wonderful, miraculous things for you and not for children who are brutally raped and murdered everyday? Why are people starving? Why do things like cancer and necrotizing fasciitis and the Ebola virus exist? Why would God reveal himself in such miraculous ways to you, and not to the millions of non-christians? What makes you so special?

I have been raised protestant. {I wasn't supposed to talk to "Pope heads"(=catholics) or non-believing children.}
When I was 11 I wanted to be a missionary.I just had to tell children about Jesus: if they didn't know about Him, they couldn't be saved.
That same year I started to read about Nordic and Greek gods, Islam and Hinduism and African religions in the local library.
One day I asked my teacher: "How can we know that our church is right? There are billions of people firmly believing other things."
My teacher looked at me with a mixture of concern and embarrassment and said:"R., you should talk to your reverend." I was completely disappointed in this weak response.
That night I couldn't sleep and I prayed:"Oh Lord, help me, I do not believe anymore."
The next morning I woke up being an atheist.

I want proof, and I don't want to be quoted scripture. Ancient peoples had the advantage of being able to witness miracles. Why have the rest of us been screwed?
