my guess would be about the time the movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" and everyone that saw the movie hated Nurse Ratchett.

it wasn't like every nurse in every situation all over usa stopped on the same day. it was slow and gradual and each hospital and facility changed their dress code (usually gradually) at different times. the hats probably stopped being required first. dress codes are still changing all the time in every hospital and yes they are still arguing about what nurses should be able to wear to work.

A bunch of years ago...they should still wear them because they looked professional and you felt better when one came to see you...now, a janitor could be working on you and you wouldn't know it wasn't a doctor....
