What symptoms are you experiencing? DID is incredibly rare, but if you are genuinely concerned about it you should simply discuss your concern with your physician who can perform an evaluation and refer you to a psychiatric specialist.

Multiple Personality Disorder / DID
is a confusing condition to both the person who has it, and to the people close to you who are seeing symptoms they do not understand. If you do have that disorder, I can understand your fear and hesitancy to address it. (A daughter of mine has MPD, and I have a lesser form of DID )

Write down for yourself the symptoms you notice that don't make sense to you or to others. Do you hear voices? Do you have mood changes or differing opinions? How is your memory of how you spent your day? Are there holes in your time? Do some people accuse you of telling lies or making up stories? Is there a part of you that does not speak? or is a small child? spends your money without you knowing it?
Do your friends have different names for you depending on your mood? Is there a sense of evil or fear sometimes? Does your memory play tricks on you? Are your emotions sometimes detached from what is happening around you?
Depression or suicidal thinking can accompany it.

Any of these symptoms can be part of a person with DID/MPD. The place to start is with your family Dr, or with your county Mental Health office. Take your list of symptoms with you. Choose 3 or 4 symptoms that concern you to communicate. They will ask you questions about those symptoms, and will do some searching to see if there are other pertinent symptoms.
If you are afraid to go alone or to do the talking, take a friend or relative you trust with you. Hand them the list of your symptoms or a list of questions.
You will find the therapist/counselor to be warm and caring. They want to help you. Not everyone believes MPD exists.
You need to know that. If the first person does not believe it exists, do not hesitate to go to another person who knows and understands how to treat it.

Of all the mental disorders out there - MPD is the ONLY CURABLE ONE. There is hope.

Your therapist will work with you and teach you how to understand what is going on, and how to minimize your symptoms.

It is a shame that mental illness is *still* such a shameful thing... even in this age when it has been proven that it is a MEDICAL issue and not anything a person can help!

My suggestion --especially with such a worrysome possibility-- would be to ask your GP (regular doc) for a referral to a Psychiatrist. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the field of Psychology/Mental Illness. They are able to *both* diagnose AND treat!

Please, friend... do not be ashamed... you have done nothing wrong. You've taken the first step, now take one more! Simply share your concerns with your doctor, telling him your symptoms, and ask for their advice... that is what they are there for -- after all, this IS a medical issue!! Don't let anyone tell you that it is not!

If you are living a life with serious unexplainable problems and events you have to cover up because they don't make sense , then you must talk to someone. The sooner you get started the better. It only gets worse and more complex if you wait. The best case scenario is you don't have it and the worst case scenario is you start your treatment sooner than later. Good luck. I hope you find a dedicated and competent therapist.
