I think it is like any religion. There is a desire within many of us to believe in God. Much of the Islamic belief is based on the Quran. Many of the teachings describe the same as the Hebrew stories. Abraham, Noah, Moses, Lot, even Jesus.
This religion is built around Eastern faith in the Prophet/Messenger of God Mohamed who claimed to have received messages from the Archangel Gabriel.
Many people do not question their belief and the belief is passed down in the family without question. It is not a matter that the religion has a great draw as it does that those who follow it are middle eastern with some converts who wish to belong to a religion that displays devotion. Sometimes it is about ego. This is my religion and it is the only one that it right. Perhaps the real Islamic religion is morally correct but for us Christians the difference is that they only except Christ as a Prophet/Messenger and not the son of God. Having One God is enough. Realizing Christ is a Son of God, does not make him God but the son, yet they do not see that God has a son, yet they believe that Jesus was a messenger. Some what confusing to Christians when they believe in the messenger but not the message. This is my opinion.

If you are born into it you aren't likely to leave it so I assume you refer to those western people who are drawn to Islam.
It attracts as it offers order, rote learning, discipline, and what some might consider the monoculture of a cult - obviating constant critical thought. (The same comment might apply to Roman Catholicism except within Romanism while there is diversity of belief this does not generally result in violent disagreement as found between Sunnis and Shias).
Also, there is a common culture of hospitality and behavior which is found worldwide. As a non Muslim I have been treated like a "visitor from Allah" scores of times and though some may say I was just lucky I deny this. The folk I know are kind and instinctively hospitable. The culture is complex and requires conformity to rules; not what many in the west want but given the social destruction and degeneracy of the west it is a safe place to raise children where people want rules and not "rights". To claim "rights" is to insult God. (The same really applies to Christians)
In addition there is the Ummah which gives a feeling of brotherhood which is seldom seen in other religions outside of evangelical Christianity (ie the Hugenots / Anabaptists / Wesleyans and latterly the Baptists) and certain cults (Mormons and Jehovas Witnesses).
I am not going to go into the different theologies within Islam which have caused so much death and horror in Iraq recently. But there are different degrees of Islam and that found in the US for example (the Nation of Islam) is markedly different from the Wahabbism of Saudi Arabia. The Islam of Morocco the UEA, Jordan and Turkey, by comparison, are more like Islam - lite than that in Saudi Arabia.
Yes the writings (of the Qu'ran) are central to the faith but the same applies to the Bible and Christianity (where the scriptures are still understood to be the Word of God). I believe it has far more to do with its permeation of the cultures to the degree that it now envelopes nearly 2 billion persons. Also, in places such as Egypt and Pakistan where there are large populations of unemployed and / or frustrated young men it is almost a recruiting ground for the "street" population and this is where a sense of belonging to a group is far more in evidence. This is a pattern repeated in western european cities such as London and Lyon where a disenfranchised and often angry second or third generation descendants of immigrants can congregate to share their woes and their plans. It is markedly collectivist (as was New Testament Christianity) which appeals to a large proportion of humanity (e.g.: the military, Roman Catholicism) and is rules led. It is far easier to live if you have a list of rules to adhere to. In that respect Islam is very reminiscent of Old Testament Judaism. Does this help?

For me, Dawn, I would say it was primarily the availability of historically authenticated scripture that affected me the most, just as you have suggested.
Another factor was that the Holy Qur'an varies from the Bible in exactly the matters I found disturbing in the latter. For example, stories that prophets of God had committed horrendous sins, and that the scriptures does not decry these actually incredible accounts.
A third was the doctrine of original sin, a concept which, to my mind, is inconsistent with human nature. Islam teaches that human beings are born pure, not in a state of sin, but are led astray by demonic influences and the resulting evils of human society.
A fourth was the rejection of the concept of substitutive sacrifice.
A fifth was the provision of historically authenticated practices of both formal and informal worship; Muslims worship exactly as we were taught by the Angel Gabriel and Prophet Muhammad, God bless them both and grant them peace.
A sixth was the direct relationship between the Muslim and God, without the need for any mediator or advocate.
The more I studied texts written by scholars of both faiths, the more I became convinced of the truth of Islam.

First Islam teaches the ONENESS of GOD.
“Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;
He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;
And there is none like unto Him.” [Quran 112:1-4]
In the Ten Commandment in Bible actually worshipping only one God and not joining God with others is a God order.
In other religion they worship not only One God, but 3 persons as a God: the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit
There is only ONE Version of Quran. In other religion you find 4 different versions of a holy book or more.
And the Quran is memorized by millions of people since Muhammad era until now. Quran is the only holy book that could be memorized by people. So the originality is preserved.
Not only the originality, but the content of Quran itself is amazing. It teaches the oneness of God, doing good deeds, and knowledge that could be proven right now such as every living things is from water, earth and sky used to be one, the universe is expanding, etc.

It promotes dominance for the chosen few. Everyone assumes that they are the "chosen" ones. In truth, even Mohammed wasn't sure the was good enough.
Christianity promotes humbleness and humility where everyone can participate in the blessings.

I really don't think they get all that many converts. In prison populations maybe and the intercity, but that is mainly NOI, which most Muslims think of as outside Islam. They are growing because of a high birth rate, not because of conversion. Islam has always converted by the sword, and conquest. 80% of all conflicts in the world involve Islam in one form or another. If any of my statements are wrong please correct me.

If offers the same thing as any other religion: Established rules, a Hierarchy system, a sense of History, a system of Morality, community cohesion, a common enemy, and a Belief System for those that need to be told 'what' ,'how', & 'when' to think.

I'm living in a country where Islamization is state sanctioned. I wouldn't say that people are being drawn into Islam because of the teaching of Islam. Most people I know who converted, is because:-
1) Muslims in my country enjoy certain special privileges. The Muslims have more rights than the non-muslims in my country the discrimination is institutionalized...
2) They fell in love with a Muslim and wanted to get married with him/her.
3) They were forced into Islam and there's no way out. You can only convert in and not convert out of Islam in my country.
4) It is prohibited in Islam to use condom or any form of birth control. So, Muslims in my country reproduce like rabbits.

Are they reproducing so they can use the children for atonement offering? Is that why children are being kidnapped? Why can't they use animals anymore? Didn't Jesus already come and gave himself as a pure atonement offering for everyone's sins? Didn't Jesus get strapped to the cross, so people won't strap themselves or children with explosive device? Didn't Jesus rose from the dead and is now sitting on the right hand of his father?
