The Holy Spirit is God.
Three Persons, One God.
From the Athanasian Creed:
That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity;
4. Neither confounding the persons nor dividing the substance.
5. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit.
6. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one, the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.
7. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.
8. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated.
9. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible.
10. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal.
11. And yet they are not three eternals but one eternal.
12. As also there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensible, but one uncreated and one incomprehensible.
13. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty.
14. And yet they are not three almighties, but one almighty.
15. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God;
16. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God.
17. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord;
18. And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord.
19. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord;
20. So are we forbidden by the catholic religion to say; There are three Gods or three Lords.
21. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten.
22. The Son is of the Father alone; not made nor created, but begotten.
23. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.
24. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.
25. And in this Trinity none is afore or after another; none is greater or less than another.
26. But the whole three persons are coeternal, and coequal.
27. So that in all things, as aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped.

There is nothing in scripture at all that would indicate that the Archangel Gabriel is the Holy Ghost!
The "Holy Ghost" is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is mentioned numerous times in the Old AND the New Testament-- here's a link to some of the passages of scripture:
http://www.biblegateway.com/quicksearch/?quicksearch=holy+spirit&qs_version=31
And this Holy Spirit spoken of in the Old and New Testaments is the SAME Holy Spirit we are talking about in the Trinity. These passages make it clear that the Holy spirit is one with God.
One very compelling passage that contains the theology of the Trinity is:
Matthew 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28:18-20
New International Version (NIV)

Note "the NAME of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Not "nameS," and also the scope of the authority that Jesus is claiming--putting himself on God's level of authority.
And here is a link for you, that will help explain the Trinity better than I can (!):

It is hard to explain but the holy ghost is a part of the trinity as a catholic we believe that god is 3 beings,
The Father - God.. no one has ever seen him and we believe in him by faith
The Son - Jesus there are stories and proof that he did walk this earth and stories on the miracles that he preformed
The Holy Spirit (or the Holy Ghost) - This spirit is all around us and continues to be there for us, The disciples of Jesus first experienced the holy spirit on Pentecost.. you might have heard the story, Tongues of fire appeared on the 12 people in the room (all disciples minus Judas and plus Mary mother of Jesus) and gave them all the 7 gifts of the holy spirit..

Courage
Reverence
Wonder and Awe
Hope that in some way answers your question, like i said it is hard to explain and it is different for every single person!
Good luck!

You will get no scripture here. There really is not enough room here to really explain it. The Trinity (3 persons) is really all about the NATURE OF GOD AS KNOWING AND LOVING HIMSELF. The dogma states that there are three persons in ONE God (the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit (Ghost). There are NOT three gods. It is a great mystery which no one can fully understand and can only be partially explained in various ways. GIVE ME A CHANCE. One God is aware of his existence and projects an image of Himself as begetting a son. He likes what he "sees". Love PROCEEDS from the two as the third entity within God mutually loving each other equally. The principle here is that all basic activity within God is God and is equal to God. Gods thoughts and actions are God Himself. Each is given the title of person since we are person and we cannot be superior to even His Thoughts as a person. However, these three entities are real actualities as real persons. I could go on all night explaining this in many different ways. Do not try to understand it completely. God is incomprehensible. Again, the nature of God is all about a great love affair that becomes the basis for creation. God is LOVE.

The Holy Spirit is the 3rd person of the Godhead. If you aren't just asking for the sake of arguing, it is a simple matter to open the Bible and find proof for the Triune God.
1 John 5:7,8
Matthew 3:16,17
etc.

The Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) is God's Spirit....Jesus was filled with God's Holy Spirit, as are all whom have followed Jesus's Word when He said that we must be baptised in water AND in the Holy Ghost (Spirit)....Having God's Holy Spirit within us all makes us one with God, Jesus and each true Believer.
Jesus called the Holy Ghost "the OTHER Comforter" (Jesus is one too) and Jesus stated that He came not only as our "Savior" but so that He could bring the Holy Spirit to us.
Before Jesus brought us God's Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit was only available to the children of Abraham :)
The Tribes had more or less ignored or refused God's "Gift" of the Holy Spirit, so that is why Jesus was able to bring it/Him to the rest of the world. :)

Thanks.

To NJ above: Can you give me the last names of the four gospel you mentioned above? Mark Who? John Who? Luke Who? Matthew Who? Do these people have last names?
How can god recreate himself? How can a man be god? How can a god be a man? How can a god have a son? Jesus DID NOT claim to be God - or even equal to God!
112:1 SAY: "He is the One God:
112:2 "God the Eternal, the Uncaused Cause of All Being.
112:3 "He begets not, and neither is He begotten;
112:4 "and there is nothing that could be compared with Him.

In any of the four gospel, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, you will read where Jesus' told His Disciples that when he left them, as He asended to Heaven that He would leave with us His Comforter, that Comforter is His Holy Spirit or some say Holy Ghost.
And His Holy Spirit guides us daily, if we are Christian.
