I will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in December, so I have started to send out my resume to a few jobs. The main job that I want, and feel qualified for, has an online application process. I uploaded my resume and answered their questions. I received an e-mail a day later stating that they had received my materials and would keep me updated on my status. My question is: how long should I expect to wait before hearing something from them? I've never applied for a "real" job before so I'm not sure how long it takes for them to make a decision on whether or not to give me an interview or whatever they may decide to do. Thanks!

If they're interested in you you should hear from them in 2-3 days.
Usually what happens is the resume is scanned into a computer then graded based on keywords. If it meets the grade it is then spit out to some HR person who will look it over than pass it on to whoever is looking to hire. Depending on how proficient the HR person and hiring manager are will determine how fast you hear from them.
The HR person could reject the resume after he/she reads it.

If you don't hear from them within 5 days and you're really interested in the job you may want to call them.
Good luck.

ps: tailor your resume to fit the job you're applying for.

Since you won't be on the market till December they may slow things down some. So it could be weeks instead of days. Follow up if you have not heard anything in a couple of weeks.
