I believe you need to show a birth certificate or ID to get a work permit if you are under 18 and a US citizen. If you are over 18 you usually need to show an ID (state ID) and SSN card to show are allowed for employment.

Go to the Social Security web page and see what is acceptable to show as ID to get a name change on your card. Bring your birth certificate and if possible an immunization record. Are you a minor? If so,one of your parents will have to come with you. You will recieve a receipt there and then and your permanent card will be mailed to your home in two weeks. Once you get the card, bring that and your other documents to your local department of motor vehicles. But I can't stress this enough. NEVER,NEVER carry your social security card in your wallet or puse if you don't have to. Keep it at home because if it gets stolen someone can use it to pretend to be you. You don't want to turn 62 one day and discover that thirty years ago someone claiming to be you took all your money and benefits.

I think having a birth certificate when looking for a job is something that many people should have. Many jobs require having a certificate of birth for verification of birthday and such. It is usually asked that you have all of your information with you at the interview or when you send your appication in.

They're probably trying to verify that you're a US citizen.
