Heres what will happen. Once you graduate ABN School, the Army will assign you to an ABN unit (i.e. a unit on jump status). The reason this will happen is because the Army will not spend the money to get you ABN qualified and then send you to a non-airborne unit. You will fall under "needs of the Army" in which case my money is on you being assigned to either 1) 82nd ABN DIV @ Bragg, or 2) 173rd ABN BDE @ Vicenza, Italy in that order. Reason being the 82nd, being 4 brigades strong, has more slots to put you in.

You may get 173rd in Italy (sweet), but most likely you'll get 82nd, or in some other way attached to 18th airborne corps at Bragg. 101st is an air assualt unit, you won't go there.

You don't need to worry about any of that though. Right now you are fixing to go to sand hill on Ft Benning - mmm memories. You need to get through that first, then you need to pass airborne - I hope you're running a lot & can do some pushups. If & when you make it though that, then the Army will put you where they need you, and it'll be on jump status.

The Army has changed so much since my time I can not keep up with mission statements. Some of what I did in Signal does not even exist now.

I believe the 82nd, the 173rd AB Brigade, The 75th Rangers and SF are the only units that might jump. Not sure about training jumps. If you don't get a response from someone with current knowledge check out the unit web sites. You might found out there.

I think part of the current re-org is creating light combat brigades in some or all ID's. Not sure if they are AB or Air mobile.

first off, you dont want 101... they arent even airborne(i know i know, they wear the tab, but only because of the history of the unit)

if you get to 101, which is in ft campbell KY, you will immediately go to air assault school for your rendezvous with destiny to become one of the "dopes on ropes". i dont recommend it.

As for 82nd... when you get to basic, you will fill out a form.. its your duty staion "wish list"... why wish list? because when you get to where they send you, youll be thinking... "i wish i got the place i asked for".

when you fill out this for, but down Ft Bragg NC. its an ok place... not too hot, not too cold.... and i really hope you end up liking jumping, cuz youll do a lot of it.

Another option you have is the 75th Ranger Regiment.

when you get to jump school, theyll ask "who wants to go to RIP?" this is the program that allows you to go to one of the ranger bats. 1, 2 or 3. here you will also earn your tan beret. after you get to a bat, youll eventually make it to ranger school to get the tab.

Another good Airborne unit is the 173d in Italy.. ive never been, but have friends who were.. they loved it.

You have a couple infantry units up in Alaska who jump as well. im pretty sure its Mechanized... which is funny for being airborne...

Good luck with your career as a paratrooper.. the greatest thing i ever did.

Youll never forget the first time you are standing in the back of a C-130 and watch that tailgate drop into the pitch black night. what a rush.

The 82nd is Airborn, the 101 is Air Assault

I do not think you need do anything

It is HIGHLY likely you will be assigned to the "Guard of Honor" 82nd Abn Div.....the second possibility is the 101st Air Assault Div......there are a few other airborne units but I highly doubt you would be qualified or assigned considering your rank and MOS
