I didnt cut myself on my wrist or thigh, I didnt want to bleed a bunch or strip down. It was on the back of my hand, kinda perpendicular to my pointer finger. It wasn't a knife, strictly speaking, it was a box cutter. The stinging made me forget what my problem was, I dont think I hurt anyone else while doing it, nor did i seriously endanger myself, so whats the problem? I didnt even try to draw attention to it, I just wiped it off and pretended like I didnt know how it had happened. so really, whats the harm?
note that i dont consider myself "emo" and im not trying to stereotype people here, but I dont wear any black or any makeup, I dont have any piercings. I dont listen to indie music or play an instrument. I wear collared shirts and blue jean, Ive even worn sandals when its warm.

You're not going to forget your probelm by cutting yourself with a knife, box cutter, or anything. I used to punch myself, and although I felt better then, in the long run it just added another probelm to my plate.
Many people who cut are not Emos, they are normal people like you who have difficulty expressing their feelings. Though I'm not sure how playing an instrument is emo, I play the flute and am the complete opposite of an Emo...
It will get worse, and you might accidentally kill yourself by cutting yourself too hard. I really don't want you to do that, as you seem like a logical, caring person, just from what I've read here.
I wish you well, and if you plan on cutting yourself again, please get some help. It can turn into an addiction fast - don't let yourself get there.

I used to do it.
I don't believe that it should be used for a style or to be cool or for attention, anyone who does that really does desrve medical attention.
I used to do it because it made all my other problems fly away. Just focusing on the pain outside instead of the inside. I didn't think there was anything wrong with it and i didnt even know what self injury was, but then i turned fifteen. six years since i started. I had to wear short sleeves for my home ec class, so i decided i should quit for a while so no one notices that this is purposeful and it would be easier to hide them.
But that was the hardest thing ever. Without the cutting, I started seeing things, became depressed, cried for no reaso, didn't want to go out. So i started again.
Its something really hard to stop after doing it for a long time. I had to find different ways to experience pain.
So i started puking up my meals, drinking, doing durgs. anything that would put me in release and control.
Recently I ahve stopped puking, but the things i see and my paranoia is getting worse.
I dont know if cutting started it, but I know that it made things alot worse.
I suggest against it.

I speak from an understanding of cutting. It's a probably that I'm overcoming, and will probably always struggle with. You may not be seriously hurting yourself, but emotionally speaking, you are. You say the stinging made you forget what your problem was (which is the same reason I cut) which is the wrong way to deal with emotional problems, or stress. When you have a problem, or need help, you need to find a way to release your feelings. Find someone you can talk to, or someone who understands.

You are not identifying and coming to grips with what is really eating you up so you can figure out how you are going to dispose of this burden in your life. If someone has physically hurt you, you may have to confront them and tell them how they made you feel and what it has done to your life (if you can safely do so). Very least, you need to talk to a therapist. You have a choice, cut yourself or don't cut yourself. Which do you suppose someone who loves and respects themselves would do. Hurting yourself more is not going to change anything.

Cutting yourself is self destructive and it can progress unless you seek help this is a control issue. This is something you have control over and you do not see any problem with it.
Cutting yourself is never right especially if you are tiring to escape some sort of pain or problem. You will have to learn how to deal with your problems with more productive activity instead of destructive behavior.
Cutters normally progress so please address this problem before it gets any worse. You deserve better.

It makes the craziness come back! Things start getting real down real quick and only more cuts ensue.
But there is always that point where you can't ignore things and bottle away what you feel anymore, and it just has to come out, and it can come in the form of cutting, I've been there.

well today you just cut yourself a little to make you feel better. This is just like doing drugs. Today just a little cut make you feel better, but after doing this for awhile just a little cut won't make your pain go away. You will have to start cutting more and more and worse and worse. Please don't ever do this again. I have never cut myself to cure my pain but I did take a lot of drugs to do the job. After awhile I couldn't stop doing the drugs and before I knew it I was addicted to heroin. The only thing that got me to quit was a heart nad brain surgery. Please, I'm begging you, don't go down this road. You might think I'm crazy comparing cutting yourself with doing heronin, but beleive me its not that different than what you are doing to yourself. If you ever want to have a chat with someone about what you are feeling please feel free t oeither e-mail or message me.

eh, the bare bones issue is the risk of infection.
also you're not dealing with your issues, just fixing it short term (some people cut themselves, some people take fistfuls of valium, some people...eat) i recommend calling a pastor or a friend or a doctor, anyone you can trust (or talk to anonymously if that is the only way it will work for you).
if you ever feel like you might hurt yourself call a crisis helpline.

doesnt matter if you wear black or makeup or have piercings; you're cutting yourself because you're emotionally distressed, hence the term "EMO!!"
cutting yourself means that you'd rather endure physical pain than face your problems. i'm not trying to imply anything bad about you, but suicidal people usually start out as skin-slitters...
i'd get some help if i were you, hun...

the problem is, it can lead to more severe cutting. If you let it become a habit, it will become dangerous, thats the problem. And really how long did it take for the memory of your pain to come back?
