Never ever ever buy a Saab.
You'll garage it more than you can drive it.

Look at the above answers and that should help you decide. Saab is just too iffy a car. It's gonna be either hit or miss with a used Saab when it comes to reliability. Most 97 cars will have some problems. Are you thinking your 97 Saab will beat the averages and be free of problems. That's a tough gamble. It will probably have a few more problems than average for a 97..
And even if you get one that is ok and doesn't break down much, the extra cost of parts will nullify any savings anyway. I recommend getting a Toyota or Honda if you can.

They're excellent cars. See if the guy will go down to $3500, as it is a 10 year old car. You could find newer cars for $2000-2500, but a Saab 900, based on the GM's German division Opel platform, with a Saab engine, is a great car. Also if there are "burnt out" pixels on the information display in the center of the dash (the SID: Saab Information Display), use that as a bargaining tool.

Saab`s are the most reliable cars on this earth, and it is a sad fact to saab-dissers that saabs are not made in japan or detroit.
those of you here that doubt saab, you come to europe, come and wach what mark of the cars people drive in northern difficult, cold circumstances with distance to nearest service 100-300 kilometers (no, they are not toyota yarises, chysler sebrings or kias)
:they are volvos, saabs and merchedeses.
same goes to upper class people because these marks happen to be the most respected ones on the market as well

Yes they are very good, but the problem is that some former owners either don't maintain their vehicles or have bought one and never had it safety checked prior to buying it. Go to a shop that specializes in Saab. Have them perform a safety check on the vehicle that you intend to purchase. Go over with the mechanic all areas that he has found to be in need of attention and ask the mechanic to give you an estimate of the cost to perform this work. Make your offer on the car with the repair cost as your leverage.
Good Luck

the early non turbo cars with the 2.3 engine & manuals are very durable if it has been maintained - call www.genuinesaab.com - they can tell you the nits with it - Ive owned several & it is the dissers that allow me to keep buying this high value car for low $$ - I have a 2002 that will flatten anything in its class ( even a BMW with a 6 cyl & still get 30 mpg & 4 star crash ). Ideally you could but a 2002 9-3 for 3-4 K more on ebay & those are much better cars - engine wise - turbo- intercooler etc - very easy to make very fast - with a chip change ..

I have a '92 Saab which I love. It's a good, solid car on the road and it's good on corners...For me, it's the style and good quality of the vehicle that appeals to me. That's not to say it is not finicky at times, but for me it's a classic.
