I agree with adrianclay, but he is mistaken on one point; the 40gb PS3 WILL play PS1 games. PS2 games, however, are not playable on the system.

If you have never owned a PS3 I also encourage you to get a 60 or 80gb PS3. You can get most PS2 games for $20 now, which is a great price for some of the best games ever made. If you just want next gen, then go ahead and get the 40 gb (hard drive space isn't an issue, as the HD is easily upgradeable in PS3's).

Basically, the only Con about the 40GB PS3 is that it isn't backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.

But the 40GB PS3 has built in WiFi though. The only other differences is that the 40GB PS3 won't have the flash memory card slots for digital cameras, and it will only have 2 USB ports.

To be honest, you could afford a 60 or 80GB PS3 too, it's just $100 bucks more just save your money for a little bit longer. I really rececommend the 60 or 80GB PS3 though. I have the 60GB PS3 and I think that the backward compatibility with the system is worth the extra $100 dollars because you can transfer all of your game saves from your PS2 and PS1 memory cards on one system, but if you already have a PS2 I guess you can play your old PS2 games on it.

Pro is that its a PS3 and it costs only $399..

Cons:
No PS2 backwards compatibility
Only 2 USB ports (other PS3s have 4)
No Memory Card support..

The 40GB is actually a good deal.. assuming you don't have any PS2 games you want to play on it.. USB ports and memory card slots don't really enhance gameplay at all.. so assuming you don't need backwards compatibility you should go for it..

The best thing I can say about the 40 gig is it's cheap. Unfortunately though I hear it doesn't have the chip that allows backward compatibility with the playstation one and two games.
