I have this book on Kabballa and it's got two chapters on Metatron who is sort of god,jr to jews. But I asked an orthodox jew about it and he denied ever having heard of any Metatron. So what's the story here?

God is entirely transcendent - we cannot know what he is, we can only know what he is not. How can a transcendent Deity communicate himself to his creation? The Jewish answer was Metatron. They believed that when God spoke, the archangle Metatron came into being and spoke the words of God. When God stopped speaking, Metatron passed out of being. In the Old Testament, they believed that references to the Angel of Yahweh or the Angel of Great Council were talking about Metatron. In particular, Metatron spoke to Moses out of the Burning Bush. In this sense, Metatron was the "Little Jehovah" who said, "I Am that I Am."

In Christian theology, the role of Metatron is filled by Christ. But Christian theology maintains that the energies of God can be communicated, so Christ is not a created being like the Jewish Metatron. In Paganism, the role of Metatron was variously filled by Hermes, Sol Invictus, Helios, or the abstract concept of the Divine Logos. In ancient Jewish synagogues, Metatron was represented as the Sun surrounded by the symbols of the Zodiac.

I don't think a Kevin Smith movie is a very good source. Wikipedia has a pretty good write up on the Metatron. Link is below.

Later Jewish tradition named the angel who held back Abraham from sacrificing Isaac (the bible never names the angel). Like other directly appointed agents of Almighty God, that angel at times spoke as though he were Jehovah (even though he was plainly a mere angelic representative of Jehovah).

(Genesis 22:10-12) Abraham put out his hand and took the slaughtering knife to kill his son. But Jehovah’s angel began calling to him out of the heavens and saying: “Abraham, Abraham!” to which he answered: “Here I am!” And he went on to say: “Do not put out your hand against the boy and do not do anything at all to him, for now I do know that you are God-fearing in that you have not withheld your son, your only one, from me.”

The name most English-speaking Jews use is "Metatron", but it seems likely that an orthodox Jew would be more familiar with some Hebrew version of the name. Also, it seems possible that a individual might recognize that this angel is named nowhere in Scripture and so the individual might reject the notion of applying any personal name to him.

This is the first time I ran across mention of a Metatron. Is this actually a Hebrew name (e.g., Mattath-Ran); or is it Greek, as I suspect? From my perspective, Metatron would be a name given a robot or computer in science fiction, and therefore most likely completely unrelated to the historical Y'shua (identified as the real God, Jr. of the Gospels). I am as skeptical as the Orthodox Jew in this regard.

The kabballa I believe is more than just a sect as the person above said, but may be an actual Jewish cult. However I may be completely wrong.

That Bible numeralism is involved in such things. I knew a guy who studied some of this stuff years ago.

Since I believe in interpreting the scriptures literally and that they are divinely inspired. I have always rejected the numerology stuff and thus the kabballa. Thus I don't know much about it.

But the movie "Pi" is interesting to watch. And its based off this numerology kabballa stuff.

Heb 12:5 But you have entirely forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons: "My son , do not belittle (the) discipline from Jehovah, neither give out when you are corrected by him; 6 for whom Jehovah loves he disciplines; in fact, he scourges every one whom he receives as a son." NWT The verses continue in talking about discipline. We are all imperfect and continue to sin, consider the discipline of today as compared to the discipline of the Law Covenant. The whole congregation would stone the sinners. Now which one do you prefer? Because of the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we can be forgiven our mistakes if we repent and change course. The time it takes to be reinstated shows humility on the part of the wrong doer, but if they truly love Jehovah and value being part of the congregation they will persist. A note to Godislove: Remember the bible says "Be wrathful, and yet do not sin: let the sun not set with you in a provoked state, Eph 4:26, So true Christians are very capable of getting angry and being perhaps "rude" sometimes with their comments. Keep in mind, the bible uses the word "stupid" many times, and again, Jesus was not nice when he threw the money changers out of the temple.
