The 42-string "Picasso" guitar, custom built for Pat Metheny is a fully playable, acoustically sound instrument. It's beautifully crafted also, though as its name implies, it's pretty abstract. It has a single sound chamber but the strings are suspended over at least three different necks of different scale lengths. Metheny has recorded with it on at least three albums.
Several companies, including Gibson and [I think] Lyon & Healy marketed "harp" guitars back in the early 1900s. They featured a standard fingerboard with the traditional 6 strings, and an additional 7 strings, suspended across open space, which could be tuned to add extended bass range or chordal support. Again, Metheny recorded with one on one or two albums, most notably New Chautauqua.
Pictures of harp guitars may be seen on the website for Elderly Instruments www.elderly.com [I think].
I've seen photos in a book of the Picasso guitar, but I'm not sure where you'd find it online.

I've seen 6,7,8, and 12 stringed guitars. Also the harp guitar has around 18 strings. Check out Andy McKee playing a hard guitar on "You Tube. com"

All i know is a 12 string guitar (acoustic and electric guitar). If more than 12 string, it might be a harp.

Either 12 or 24. It depends on the type of guitar ~ as to whether your counting the type with the two fingerboards! However, there are other 'guitar like instruments' which I understand have a few more ~ and I think somewhere around 30.
