My car only has 81,000 miles on it but it's 12 years old. The only reason I'm selling it is because I've had it for a year and now I no longer enjoy it so I want something newer and different. Thats it!There's nothing wrong with the car! Yet whenever I tell people I'm selling to get a new car, they dont believe me, even after seeing first hand that there's nothing wrong with it. The only reason people ask: "why are you selling?" is to find out if the owner is selling because the car has problems. As if the owner would really answer that truthfuly if they were selling because the car has problems. Give me a break. Such a dumb worthelss question. They think that my excuse is a red flag that there's some hidden problem with the car. Did I miss the memo that said people are no longer allowed to want newer, different things? It's gotten to the point where I'm going to have to lie. Anyone know any good believable excuses?

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the mileage and the fact that I've only had it for a year. People can't comprehend why someone would want to sell a car after 1 year with only 81,000 miles, which is low for a 12 year old car but a fair amount in general. I've tried using the "I just got a really good job so I'm looking to upgrade to a new car" excuse and that doesn't work. Car buyers seriously need to stop being so paranoid.

I would believe your answer if you told it too me. The other option that you can provide is to have the car checked out by a mechanic or have them check the car out from a mechanic. If you have some documentation showing when the car was checked out and what was checked it would put them at ease more. Quite frankly I wouldn't worry about how people react to your answer. I would say, "the car no longer suits my needs, I need something more :Fuel efficient:more space: more power: smoother ride: better safety options:, that's why I'm selling it. pain and simple. hope this helps.

I know what you mean. I have a friend with the same sort of problem. She's got a 10-year-old car. It has quirks, but it's a great car. She just wants something newer and cooler. She asked me pretty much the same question when she realized she wanted to sell her car. It's her first car. It was always gonna be a temporary thing until this coming tax season. She's gonna get a lot more money because last year she had only been working for 6 months. I told her to tell them that it's her first car, and she wants something newer now that she can afford it. If you're young enough, maybe people would believe that.

Just tell them you want to get a different car and leave it at that. There is no good reason to lie to a bunch of strangers over something so trivial.

Tell them the truth. If they don't believe you, then tell them to have their mechanic check the car out. If they don't believe, that's their problem. They can let their mechanic tell them, it is a good car.

good luck.

Just tell them the real reason your selling it...if they dont believe you tell em to drive it and see if they can see a valid reason otherwise why your selling it...
