Depends on the location of course. The other answers you got were good advice. I would consider living in Slidell, Covington, or Mandeville. I live 70 miles north of the "New Orleans" end of the Causeway bridge, and I commuted to work every day for 8 years. If you must live in New Orleans proper, you'll want to start looking for a private school for your daughter immediately. The public school system is in shambles in NO. Unless you're planning to move into a high end gated community on the outskirts of NO, I'd advise against living in the city.

I see most have answered with the negative but like any other city New Orleans has the good and bad sides. With a 4 year old you will need some sort of support system. It would be best if you have other family there but it not it's not impossible to live there and feel safe.
While communing is an option, there are more places than Slidell,Covington and Mandiville. There are also great communities past that (Hammond Loranger Independence Robert) that offer the "safer" routes while still in the communing area.
Private schools are better right now just like they always have been but the public school system is still in the building stages and private schools are always expensive
Housing is of course quite high and building there has lots of new restrictions. If you've been offered a job there with good income you won't have a lot of problems but if your going there to start over and have no skills you need to just stay put. This is not a town for the faint hearted. Crime is rampant and not just for crack Cocaine as one answerer pointed out. There are vicious crimes for a multitude of reasons (gangs, non-educated desperation etc)With common sense you should enjoy New Orleans. Good luck!

I agree with Barry.
New Orleans is just like any other large city- there are good areas, bad areas and everywhere in between. And so long as you use your common sense, then your chances of something bad happening are no better or worse than anywhere else.
Places like Slidell and Mandeville (on the northshore of the lake) do have nice homes/communities but that's not new orleans- that's the "metro area". Very different.
If you want to live in New Orleans then you need to live in Orleans parrish or at least somewhere in "Jefferson parish" i.e. cities like Metairie, Kenner, Harahan, etc.
Good luck with your move :)

I live in New Orleans and have two little girls. I had been living in Mid-City which was heavily damaged by Katrina. Even though I really didn't see any crime in the immediate area, I really didn't feel very secure in such a deserted neighborhood. Last year we moved to the Uptown area. I love it. It's beautiful, has the very nice Audubon park and zoo close by, was relatively undamaged by the hurricane, and I feel very safe here. This is definitely the area I would recommend for families moving to the city.

Look, don't move to the projects or any of the surrounding areas. If you have a decent job, housing isn't all that bad (insurance is a little high, though). The key term in this converstation is "common sense". And, yes, your best bet would be a private school. I promise you, once you get settled and get over the culture shock, you will love New Orleans and never want to leave her.
PS- If you don't want to look like a tourist, do NOT say "N'awlins".... Its just annoying! lol

i feel that if u use common sense and check out the options for schools and the neighborhoods before you move there u and your child will be safe. There is no reason to assume that if you move on the outskirts of New Orleans you will be so much safer the are drugs everywhere in all neighborhoods and they are being sold by low income ,medium income and high income.how can a low income person afford to buy thousand of pounds of drugs to sell?I just get so tired of people trashing New Orleans. There are bad people everywhere black white and everything in between.

New Orleans has some high crime rates, like most big cities, and also like many big cities, it has areas that are worse than others. People in nicer neighborhoods can afford better security, and the more low-income areas tend to have more people who solve their desperation by resorting to crime.
Are you OK with commuting a little? Slidell is a bit safer and is 30 minutes away.
I don't want to discourage you, because NO so desperately needs fresh blood, people to work and live and pay taxes there. And it is possible to find nice areas, but it's hard without $$$.
Find a good, reputable realtor who has kids themselves. Good luck!

I believe if you use common sense like you would in any metropolition city you'll be fine. With the rebuilding of the city there is obviously no shortage of jobs, not to mention many of the public schools that have reopened are much better than before.

Yes, there are good and bad areas in every city, but N.O has always been an unsafe city (murder capital of the world) and a terrible place to raise a child. The crime and poverty there now are worse than ever. The school system there is a disgrace. If you have other options, you should reconsider relocating to another city.

I'm in new orleans right now and just the y other day a lady 10 year old daughter was raped and killed. I am about to move from here Iove my city but I think you should move to Slidell and somewhere else but new orleans. New I will always visit atleast 6 times a year But I just can't stay here anyomore. I know there is crime everywhere But we all know New orleans have the higest murder rate. You should move somewhere where you can walk you dog at night without having to worried about getting rob are rape, You should move somewhere where you daughtewr can walk home from school without getting hit by a stray bullet. You dshould move somewhere where you kid can play outside in the front yard without you having to supervise her every 5 mins or so. New orleans is not a place for that. I'm 19 years old and my family and I are moving to georgia . It is not like it use to be. Think of you daughter and what is more comfortable for you. I loveing living in a neighbor hood where I can go to sleep without having to lock my doors and 3 alarming system. Maybe you can move into a nice gated subdivision. but gated gates don't alaways work.
I say move somewhere where you can sleep at night and don't have to worried about anything.
