Im a dentist working in an hospital. I see all the time peoples that comes with huge swelling du to an abcessed tooth that they just didnt took care of.

What happen: there is an infection that the body cant clean. Pus start being created and drain in the cheeck. The swelling can become extensive in less than 3 days. Some time the eyes/airway get closed. It can be severe enought that you have to be hospitalized and stay in hospital for 1 week.

So dont wait too much and get that tooth cared of.

Have they extracted the tooth yet? If yes, then I usually take one of those popsicle things kids eat that come in plastic envelopes and you cut the top off to eat them? I hold one of those between my teeth or gums, and let the cold help the pain. Take pain meds or 900mg of ibuprofen/6 hours.

If the tooth is still there, your dr. should have given you an antibiotic. That will help the pain often when nothing else will. Put an ice pack on the outside of your cheek, and take ibuprofen as above.
