Where did you hear that? I remember seeing a report on the cost to make a PS3, and, from what I remember, it was much higher than that. As a matter of fact, something was said along the lines that Sony was losing money on every console it sold.

What are you talking about? The price for a cheap stand alone Blu-Ray player is around $500 and the more expensive models cost more than that and the 40GB PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray drive for $400.
Just because the 40GB PS3 is cheaper than the expensive stand alone Blu-Ray players, that doesn't mean that it isn't a quality Blu-Ray player because it's made by Sony. Sony makes the most respected products in the electronic world.
The way I see it is that the Xbox 360 is overpriced. The Xbox 360 Elite costs $450 and has no Blu-Ray compatibility and the 40GB PS3 has Blu-Ray, Bluetooth built in WiFi, the cell processor and so much more for $400. The PS3 isn't overpriced it's underpriced.
And a bigger hardrive can be purchased to be put in the 40GB PS3 for less than half of what Microsoft charges for there Xbox 360 harddrives.

Maybe if you disected it down to litterally the component level of costs. But dont forget for every component there is a cost with it. Weather that cost is in machine time and energy or human labor there is a cost to put things together. Then there is overhead after all the machines and people makeing the product need to be inside a sheltered area to work and assemble the poduct. People dont work for free either and even if they are in a foreighn country where wages are very low they still add overhead. Then the product has to be advertized effectivly and it has to get to the store shelfs more overhead. Even if the components cost as little as 100$ there is a lot of overhead associated with getting product to market and I never even mentioned all the labor and resources used to first research the product and the costs of simply drawing up the schematics and haveing an engeneer desighn the thing and then prototype and build them for functionality. The only reason products are offered at low prices like that are because companys expect there costs to build the product to go down over time and to sell massive quantitys of the product.

The components that Sony took away to make the 40 gb costs less than 100 bucks. But the cost to make the 60 gb PS3 was well over 800 bucks.

Not sure where you get your info from. It costs about $100 bucks just for a Blu-Ray diode. That's not even figuring in the Cell processor and the GPU.
All total, it costs more than $400 to make a PS3. They sell it at a loss, in the hopes of turning a profit overall through peripherals like extra controllers and licencing fees from thrid parties.
