are braided hdmi cables better then not braided? if so why?

They are definitely better'. It is mainly because of better shielding but they are also tougher and more durable

I suspect the twists in the wires are to mimic twisted-pair network cables so they can run longer.

For runs under 15 ft it probably does not matter.
