Now I know that this question has been asked many a time before, but really, is it better? All of the other questions I have read on the subject always say that Vista isn't better, but they never give any good points about Vista besides it looks cool. Now I would like and equal argument pointing out good AND bad views about BOTH operating systems.
Now if it looking cool is really the only better thing about it, well, that's just it. I have heard though that Windows Vista is truly Windows XP with a new look.

Thank You.

P.S. I noticed that on at least one of the answers, part of their answers said that you'd need to check if your hardware/software is compatible with Vista. I'd just like you to know that I'm not uprgrading. If I get Vista, it is going to be on a brand new computer.

Depends. Vista is fairly good looking (though I got a little seasick when I first played with it), but it also has a number of driver issues and other things that are just annoying that are *supposed* to be fixed in an upcoming service pack, SP1.

It really depends on what you're looking for; Vista has a lot of new security measures (UAC, Bit Locker, a new networking stack), along with usability improvements in the form of a new UI, but you still have to take into account driver issues and apps not functioning properly.

Before you decide to go to Vista, it is best to check if your hardware is compatible (Microsoft provides a tool that does this), if your peripherals (printers and whatnot) are compatible, and if the apps you need are compatible.

ammm for me it depends on the user,., windows vista is cool in terms of security, themes and the whole interface but not all applications that are out on the market is supported by windows vista(ofcourse it's a new OS) windows xp is much easier to use. but vista is much cooler if you know how to use it..

a short summary: windows vista is much better than XP if you know how to use it.. if you are computer savvy u will say that xp is better.. :D

I think you answered your own question. Vista looks cool... That's about it.

Is the GUI worth the hassle of a slew of incompatibilities? I'd like to run DX10 games, but not willing to switch yet because of all of the troubles.

Depends on who you talk to. I have both - XP on desktop and Vista on new laptop. I'm perfectly happy with XP. Vista works differently and requires time to learn that which I've been doing. I have found that setting Vista to "classic view" - which makes it resemble XP, helps. You might want to read these:

gamefreak-

as the previous responders have said....Vista does look cool and has some nice new features....a few things take a bit getting used to (like anything new)......but what is REALLY different and will take others some time to learn is the new OFFICE 2007...completely different look and interface....
I guess we are constantly learning something new. :)
