Yes it's a pretty good card to start with.
Walmart often has 0% interest for 6 or 12 month promo's when you spend a certain amount or on selected items.
Walmart is also great for granting credit limit increases every 4 months as long as you have been using the card in the past 4 months, even if you use it for minor purchases and pay in full. To get the credit limit increase after the first 4 months (and every 4 months after), log on and hit the credit limit increase button. If you get denied, try again in two or three weeks.
They do not pull a hard inquiry when you hit the credit increase button - another plus with the Walmart card.
You can make payments online, by mail or in-store at the checkout or customer service desk.
Keep it in good standing and you will create a good history with GEMB and have an easier time getting other GEMB backed cards.

The first poster is incorrect. It reports to all credit bureaus on a timely basis.
Yes the interest is high, it's a store card. That's why it's best to pay in full or utilize the 0% interest promo's.
Also, if you use it at a Walmart supercenter gas station you normally get a discount on the gas (but as always, check to make sure that gas station offers the discount first before assuming they offer it)

Walmart's retail card has many of the same features as the Discover card, including the $20 bonus rebate and the gasoline discount. However, you can't use the card outside Walmart and therefore don't earn the one percent spending rebates. The APR on the store card is also a lot higher. Even if you could beat Wal-Marts offering of their Wal Mart Credit Card, you would do best to just keep your sights set on the Wal Mart Credit Card instead. What usually happens is another retailer comes trying to make a big splash, then they go bankrupt trying to compete with Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is just too powerful for words.

Getting a walmart credit is not the best way to go about building credit for several reasons. First, they do not report your activities to the big three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) therefore it would be hard for you to build credit. Second, their APR (annual percentage rate) is way too high. Third, it is a very limited card that you can only use at walmart. You do not have the freedom a credit card holder should have.
