Hi all,
I need information about schizophrenia and how it affects society. ie books, articles, etc. My group is doing a reseach project for my psych class and my assignment is to find out how schizophrenia affects people around them, the social aspects of it and whatnot. I'm not sure but a classmate was saying that they heard of a book and it was written by a sister of someone with schiz. Something like that would be perfect, cause I'm just trying to get basically the viewpoint of the people around them. Hope this all makes sense. I could really use your help!!!! Thanks

Mad mac is right. I know a couple people with schizophrenia who are just fine folks who are fun to be around. The meds can be very helpful for some people. The fact that there are not a lot of employment opportunities for people with schizophrenia is a societal issue, plus people with schizophrenia who are not taking medication or have no health insurance can in SOME cases have run ins with the police. Or a person can end up chronically homeless and victimized by others who do not have a mental illness. There can be a very big strain on family members trying to get care for a person with schizophrenia when our society doesn't do well on health care anyway, and really does poorly on mental health care.

Try to avoid calling people with schizophrenia as schizophrenics - you are identifying a person as nothing more than their disability. Say a person with schizophrenia.

Hope some of those things are pointers that will help in your paper. If all the books you read go on and on and on about how bad it is dealing with someone with this illness, well then you're only seeing the negative and need to read stuff written by people with the disability and see their viewpoints, too.

I am answering this because I feel we are being left out. I'm a schizophrenic paranoid and not all of them are unapproachable or so out of it they can't carry on intelligent conversations. Many live pretty normal lives. It might help your essay to interview some people who actually have the disorder and get their viewpoint.

In this vein feel free to go to my profile and look up the answers to questions about schizophrenia I have made and answers to other questions to get some idea of where I am coming from. Or e-mail; me I will answer,

Good luck with your paper, good mental health, peace and Love!

read: john read book on schizophrenia. i had a friend that had that and she seemed okay on surface but get to know her better and it was weird. the person is not the same as others i've know. it was very difficult to be around the person and get any emotional satisfaction/connection. they don't seem to get certain social stuff. they have very bad judgement in terms of people and their motivations. they don't connect with people in terms of understanding how a person feels. they talk in metaphors and quotes. for example: if you tell them something that happened and what you feel, they would keep repeating a quote and show no connection to what you say. and the biggest lesson i've learned is to not to try to change the person because they don't heal or change like how someone with depression or phobias can. they are in extreme denial of life and refuse to see reality. it's not only they can't see reality, they don't want to see reality(i've known that from conversations). sometimes reality hurts too much. and they can only express themself in symbols and stories.

Try the book Surviving Schizophrenia, I can't remember the author's name, but it's a great book.
