I tell my client it makes the color better, but in reality it doesn't really matter. I like the hair to be slightly dirty, not washed the day of the service. The oils in the hair and scalp will help the hairline and scalp to not be stained by the color. Clean up is much easier when you are finished. Product in the hair doesn't matter much to me as I know most of the professional colors I use will eat through almost anything!

It depends on the brand of hair dye. You can get dyes that last an even shorter time, but with any of them you are liable to have your hair remaining darker for a noticeable period. Another thing to note is that some black dyes are a brown-black, so they fade through relatively natural colours. Others are a blue-black, which gives a more solid black colour generally, but can fade through less natural shades. The brown-black dyes would at least fade through colours which are more suitable in a work environment. Hair colour spray is least likely to stain your hair, but as well as the cost for the spray, it has a tendency to rub off on furniture and clothes, particularly if you have long hair, so I wouldn't recommend it. Another thing to note is that if you decide you want to try bleaching your hair back to more your natural colour, some dyes can end up a funny colour, so you'd definitely need to test it with a section of hair that you could then cut off if it goes green (as many do).

RE:
Why does your hair have to be dirty when you dye it?
Does the color hold to the hair better that way? What difference will it make if you wash your hair first and then color it? Also, if it has to be dirty, does it matter if you have gel and/or hairspray in it?

Hair conditioner coats the hair with chemicals like silicon that make it behave. The dye can't get to the hair beneath the fresh conditioner. Gel and hairspray are the same. But if it's not fresh, chances are it's flaked off or brushed out, whatever, but certainly not present in the amounts it would be right after gelling/spraying.

Having some natural oils in your hair will keep it from being quite so dry once you've processed it. Depending on what you use, the hair shaft may be opened and pigment deposited (when you go darker) or your own pigments bleached out. (If you mix two ingredients together, you're definitely opening the hair shaft.)
Product is probably not such a great thing to have in your hair when coloring.

Jake has the only professional advice listed on this page. He's right! 100% - it doesn't matter if your hair is clean or dirty.
If you are going to squirt haircolor all over, why start with a clean slate? Your hairdresser is simply going to have to wash out all the haircolor once the service is completed.
Also, if you over manipulate your scalp before a chemical service, you risk developing a skin irritation. It's best not to shampoo, so you don't scratch your scalp or irritate it before you apply color. In many cases, it will feel like your scalp is on fire.
Finally, some haircolor services actually recommend shampooing before, like demi permanent haircolors/color gloss.
So, it's not cut & dry, but in general, your oils, gels and hairspray aren't going to protect you or interfere with the color, as the haircolor, ammonia and peroxide will penetrate right through everything, they won't provide any added protection.

Jet black hair. I have really dark brown hair and I consider dark hair looks better. I don't really like blonde hair.

It's better with the holding. & washing first probably wouldn't be as good as not. I don't know if it matters i would just brush it is you have products in it.
