If you're looking for cardiovascular fitness and weight lose, you want an exercise that involves large muscle groups and gets your heart rate up into the aerobic zone for at least 20-minutes at a clip. Getting your heart rate higher than that means burning a higher percentage of carbs than stored fats. You are actually better off keeping a moderately comfortable heart rate. Do a search on heart rate zones to calculators to figure out your heart rate ranges. If you're serious, you might want to invest in a heart rate monitor to monitor your heart rate and to see how many calories you are burning. Polar, Timex, etc make some nice models that have a chest strap and work well. Basically, you need to burn more calories than you are taking in. You burn more calories with exercise, and many people find they are not as hungry when they exercise.

Running/jogging is a good aerobic activity, but if you're substantially overweight you'll find it's not very comfortable and hard on your joints. Swimming, biking, elliptical, and even fast walking are lower impact and might be more comfortable. I do recommend starting out slow and building up slowly. As a rule, you want to avoid increasing mileage more than 10% a week. Adding some strengthening exercises such as lifting pilates, etc will help prevent injuries too.

Swimming is a great exercise. Swimming is a great cardiovascular workout, plus there is no impact on your joints, like running.

Doing laps should do about the same thing as running, but without impact. Try it.

Your local gym should have an inside swimming area.

running does not exercise the entire body, swimming does. running works no muscles in the upper body.

the diet that you follow determines the size of your muscles not the exercises used to stimulate them.

Pilates is a great exercise. If you do it on the Reformer with the springs for versatility you will be amazed at how strong you will get.
